JR -

I'm still stuck. Is there way to check and see if the Microsoft VB files installed correctly?

And just for the record, what does that error message say that I keep seeing? (It's the same one that Acheron posted above) ...

I really want to get this working.

Thanks.

Glassthrower,

Sorry, I have needed two days to resolve the setup problem. I have prepared a completely new setup system in English finally, with MS windows installer (MSI format). Ah, yes: you don't need to install any other external files (runtime files): everything is self-contained in the setup files I link below. I have checked it in two PC and it works fine. Try it, I hope that this time there will be no problem, with a minor exception.

The exception: Edit the shortcut that will appear in your desktop when the installation finishes and write the folder that you have selected for installing the application (shortcut properties, field: "start in"). It appears empty in the files I have prepared, I still do not know why. Just write the application folder so that it can start from there. I apologize: this is the first time I have used the windows installer.

This is the link:

Zip containing the new setup files

The first run will launch the folder setup dialog. If you have corrected the shortcut, 4 of the 5 system folder will be OK. The other is not essential, ignore it. Then just click [Proceed] to write the INI file. The program will create it and will finish. Then start it again to apply it. That's all, I think. Tell me if you need any more detail.

There is an alternative easy solution: go to the application folder, delete (if exist) the file CNebulaX.INI, and double click in CNebulaX.EXE icon to start the program from there. The INI will be then created right. Indeed, the program create the INI always well, but since the shortcut does not point to the right place, the program cannot find it. You can create a shortcut from there in the conventional way.

The ZIP file is bulkier (45 Mb) this time because it includes the full ephemerides system (the asteroids databases #2 and #3 are huge). The setup files also includes the latest EXE (updated: 1.05.54). It only needs the additional databases you want to install (do not update it, it is the latest ). Grab the GSC and all what you want from my website.

JR -

Many thanks for the updated file. I'm going to start the download now. I won't get a chance to install it until tomorrow when I get home from work. I'll let you know how it went.

Thanks again and clear dark skies to you...

Ok, I've followed ALL the instructions, I've downloaded and redownloaded, installed and RE installed and all I get it is the Set up for the INI. WHAT am I doing wrong? I'd love to use this program but I cant get it to load and run.

Jose -

IT WORKS!

Wow....I'm impressed and intimidated at the same time! This looks like a very useful and powerful piece of software. I tinkered around with it a little, but I haven't had a chance to try out all of the features.

What I am really interested in, is printing finder charts for objects. I cannot try any charts yet because my printer is out of ink!

Thanks for creating this and sharing it with the world...

Clear dark skies to you...

Joan -

Are you having problems with the first version of the program installer or did you download the second (English) version that Jose posted? I could not get the first versions to install, but the last link (the 45-megabyte one) worked like a charm.

Mike,

The download I got was the english version, 43.2 mg according to my computer. I just can't get past the initial screen where you put in the INI settings. It won't progress beyond that.

Hi everybody

Glassthrower, these are very good news. I'm very glad because finally you have succeeded. Now you should install all the supplementary databases and enjoy it (and get a new ink cartridge as well)

StargazerJMK, the error you are obtaining comes from the shortcut. I explained in my previous message the way of solving this. There is a very easy way of overcoming it:

1) Go the program folder with the windows explorer
2) Delete the CNEBULAX.INI file
3) Double click in CNebulaX.exe

Just that. If everything is OK, create the shortcut manually with the windows explorer in the program folder, and move the shortcut to the place you want.

I have linked a NEW HANDBOOK. I hope this will be of help. The new installation files are already available through the STANDARD DOWNLOAD PAGE.

I have been working this weekend in some changes. I have replaced the ZIP I placed last friday for downloading with some changes that are explained in the COMPLEMENTS WEBPAGE. The problematic shortcut has been removed from the current installtion files. The supplementary asteroid databases are linked in the complements page to reduce the size of the setup files. In this way, the installation file is 30 Mb and I have got some room to include the HTML handbook in the standard setup.

I will include an update of the EXE file solving some problems with the RTF viewer likely tomorrow. Have a look to the handbook, it is the best way of knowing what the program can do.

Wahey... looks excellent. Can I use it to produce the kind of charts that you showed for the constellation Lynx?? (Ie the ones with the multiple levels of zoom in one picture).

I have a list of objects I want to produce charts for. Thanks for all the hard work!!

Cheers

PeterW

PeterW,

The current CNebulaX version plots the main map with an optional a small map locator at the top-left corner showing a wider view, whereas the toolbox (tabbed area) displays small maps that can be set at any arbitrary magnification or show pictures, or data. In practice, this triple system resolves fairly well the navigation through the sky. You can have three views at different magnifications simultaneously, and use them interactively to move the maps, make zooms in the main map, etc.

In the current release, print outputs are still restricted to the area shown in the main map, so only a single view is plotted. For printing, the number of objects, line width, and star number and size can be customised (and other properties). The former PDF map you mention (Lynx) was plotted with an old application I developed years ago that can make mosaic maps. It was the same application I used to prepare the 5800 minimaps I shared with people of Cloudy Nights some time ago. My intention is to arrive to that level of mosaic maps with CNebulaX printing progressive maps, but I still have to work to arrive to that. It is not too far, because the project is very mature at the moment.
