For sheer spectacle the prize has to be split between NGC 4565 (in a 36"!), Omega Centauri and M31.

M31 is bigger than most galactic balls of dimly glowing lint, but it's still an indistinct fuzzball in most scopes. To me, M104 is much more impressive with enough aperture to make the "Sombrero" nucleus and "brim" dustlane large and distinct enough.

For me, the most impressive DSO is M42, without a doubt. Later, M81 and M82 are my favorite galaxies with my 8" reflector and my SkyMaster 15x70.
This forum is the best one than I have seen of astronomy. Pardon my bad english. It is very interesting read you!. Greetings from Spain!

Omega Centauri, the Tarantula Nebula, and Eta Carina with the Homunculus nebula. Unfortunately they are all southern sky objects. *sigh*

NGC2070 - Tarantula Nebula. Easy naked eye, with smallish tint of red. In binoculars will can see its legs. In telescopes, you see a lot arcs and loops that you say "wow".
Clear skies to all,

I second the M24 starcloud. Simply stupefying in it's majesty. I've seen anything that made me feel so small.

ngc104 (47tuc) never fails to impress. Always draws the biggest wows, oohs and aahs (and the occasional swear word).

I'll target my list to the northern casual observer or member of the general public (ie: not a scope nut):
In city light pollution - Double Cluster in a long FL. scope, Pleiades in a rich field scope (nebulas too faint) In dark sky - Omega Centauri (if accessible), M13, M42, M51, M27, Leo Triplet, Virgo Cluster, M104

I spent several hours logging open clusters and HII regions located within the LMC with a 22" Starmaster in 2002 and 2004. The Tarantula Nebula was quite a sight through that telescope.

There are many impressive DSO's to me, but the Orion Nebula, Omega Centauri and NGC-4565 are definitely among the most impressive in big or small telescopes.

Someone needs to put a vote in for M104 the sombrero galaxy. Its a classic galaxy that always shows well through almost every aperture even under less than perfect skies.

Yeap, that's my wife's favorite. Everytime we do go out during the spring...she swings the 22" at the Sombero...and cranks up the magnification to about 300x and enjoys for at least 10-15 minutes.

Globular clusters my favorite will be Omega Centaruri Open clusters the Per double cluster Planetary nebulas the Eskimo nebula Other nebulas Orion’s Galaxies Andromeda
All but the Eskimo can be seen with the unaided eye with dark skies.

I really like edge-on galaxies, so NGC 4565 in Coma Berenices is high on my list. I also really like M51 with lots of aperture.
