For those of you that have not be able to see M1 in smaller aperatures, I suggest you make sure of centering your view on where you know it should be and then using more magnification. Higher magnification often helps.

Nice sketch! That's all you need to do a post mortem on an observation. What was the approximate fov of this sketch? Sorry if you wrote this elsewhere. I'm looking at CdC right now trying to match your sketch. Sketch-matching. Hmm, sounds catchy, no? Itchy scratchy sketchy matchy?

I've had a look and I don't see the asterism I described on the drawing. Could be a 'loose' dim star cluster? Pity tonights too foggy, I have to determine whether I saw M1 one way or the other.
BTW Sander, the FOV is quoted as 5.5 degrees (96m/1000m).

The Crab is fairly easy in my 70 mm TeleVue Pronto. It's a grey smudge in the scope. I like to pretend that it is a bright supernova and imagine how Taurus would look.

I can say for certain in a 4.25" f/10 reflector in the late 1960s.
Same here, I saw it for the first time in my old Edmunds 4.25 reflector (which I still have) in the late 70's though.

I have observed M1 with my ETX 105 under lightpolluted skies.
Not a stunning view, but I could detect some detail. Here's my sketch.

I have seen it with my 7 x 50’s at a mag 7.1 dark sky site but it was not as impressive as any size scope on it.

A 10x50 binocular was the smallest instrument in my case, IIRC.
