I had two very good nights for viewing this past weekend, even with the brightening moon. It's low behind the trees from my yard so the only interference is sky glow and that was not yet to bad.
Gamma Delphinus is a 9.6" double with components of 4.5 and 5.5 mag. The Fujinon 16x70s clearly split this double Friday night. I could see the smallest of black space between the two. Pentax 16x60s distinctly showed the two components, but I would have to say in the Pentax it appeared notched and not a clean break. The Fujinon focus to a much finer pinpoint and have the ability it seems to discern much finer detail. I had no problem with the Pentax seeing M31-M32 and M110. Splitting this double is just beyond the abilities of my 15x70 Oberwerk.
So, has anyone tried Gamma Aries, Mesartim, with their bigger binoculars? It's 7.8" and a perfectly even pair. It should be do-able with a fine pair of 20x binocs.

Hi Ed,
I have tried on various occasions to split these very two doubles
as they are well positioned on the celestial sphere at this time of year
but have not been able to with my KRONOS 20x60s.
Mind you, this may not be a particularly significant finding due to collimation
problems I have had - discussed on other threads.
But in any case, both should be splitable at 20X.
Should be interesting to hear what others have experienced.
It occurs that a double-splitting capability test might be a good
way to compare binoculars as it incorporates several optical
system parameters at the eyepiece (bottom line).
I think your efforts to derive a unified binocular test procedure might benefit form a test of this type. First
step: develope base-level splitting capability which I guess
is exactly what you are trying to do.

Hi Scott,
yes, I have been trying to collect info from observers relative to maximum ability, either with scopes or binocs. reference my earlier posts on Acuity in both Doubles and Binocular Forums. it would be very easy using this data to judge equipment abilities or eyesight. Once the limits of eyesight are known for an individual, further tests using other equipment becomes a relative comparison of performance. Personally I've recorded notes using 15 different binoculars.
I'm always trying different things, sometimes without knowing where it will lead. Then some days i'm sitting there looking at all my notes and it turns into an article.
In the meantime, it's always fun to get outside and view for fun and sometimes push viewing to the limits. These are right at the limits.
I'd like to get a report from somebody who can split gamma Aries with 20x or 22x. I do't think it could be done with less.
