The new 66 SD doublets are so popular, what could be better? How about a binocular using the same objectives? Here William Yang holds up the prototype for us to glimpse.

With specs like this for objectives it should be an interesting binocular. Burgess and TMB were to have something like that but I have not seen any news on it lately.

Joe,

The BO/TMB product was supposed to be 22x65. Last I heard was that they were going to brace the objective ends like some of the larger binos. That was a long time ago.

The Tak 22x60 was also similar, in that, a couple of small apo telescope objectives are used.

I would guess these would end up with similar magnification. A 18mm ep would give 22x, what a surprise. This would give a exit pupil of 3mm. A 26mm ep gives ~15x and an exit pupil of ~4.4mm. Now it's starting to look like a 15x70 with the possibility of good eye relief.

I wonder which way, or some other way, WO will go with a product like this? Maybe it could be called the "Bear Trap", or the "uber".

Peter,

Burgess has listed so many interesting products (Backpacker 101 550mm FL ED $799 scope,90 deg AFOV Hyper wide angle eyepieces , 92mm APO etc)in the last several years that never shipped, so who knows if that binocular will ever sees the light of day (or dark of night).

Joe,

The WO prototype would seem to be be able to fill the void left when the Tak 22x60 was discontinued. I hope WO has better luck than BO in bringing a product to this niche market.

WO 66mm SD Doublet binoculars/BO 22X65 new [Re: pcad]
      #990058 - 06/07/06 10:52 PM

Peter,

This is the Burgess 22X65 I saw at NEAF 2005:

Burgess 22X65 Prototype

It was fairly light weight. Felt like a Oberwerk 12X60 with slightly larger objectives and barrel extention. There was a tripod adapter threaded into the 1/4-20 tripod socket and an attached rod similar to the old Oberwerk 20X80 Dlx I. The rod did not extended all the way forward and did not have an Orion Megaview style objective brace. I have read TMB's comments about the superlative optics on Yahoo Burgess Forum prior to going to the show so I was eager to have a look. To me the bino had good optics, bright for a 22X with ~3mm exit pupil and good resolution. But the $69 Celestron 15X70 Skymaster looked bright and sharp under the lights in the exhibit hall too. If you get my drift....

The WO 66mm looks massive compared to the BO 22X65. I'd guess the finished product will be at least 7 lbs.

I am not especially interested in a 66mm astro bino with SD glasses but would be for long range terrestrial viewing if the CA is kept to a minimum.....and if the price is under $500.

FYI, I've asked on the WO Yahoo group how the 66mm "apo" binocular is progressing, and it was confirmed that it'll be out later this year.
