Plastic shed with easily removable roof? new
      #5370092 - 08/15/12 12:55 PM

Hi all…I want to build an observatory from a plastic shed due to its ease of removal. What I want to know is if anyone knows of any sheds that have an easily removable roof like to old “Thinking Outside sheds” which are no longer available? I can’t do a roll-off due to space. The best option I have seen with currently available sheds is the Rubbermaid Big Max; I actually have one as my garden shed…but it is not perfect due to the center beam and having to take off each roof panel individually (One side of the shed will be inaccessible against a fence).
I am hoping to find one where the roof can be lifted off from the inside or slid to one side?
Size needed in the 7x7 – 8x 8 ranges.
Any help appreciated?

DN.

Hi..thank you.
I haven,t found a great solution yet as a lot of the sheds mentioned are either no longer available or have changed their design. i.e. Rubbermaid's Big Max roof is now harder to remove than the older versions.

But you still have to mount, right? Think of an interface that you can build to connect the roof and the walls.

Take a look at what I did with a 7x7 Rubbermaid

My shed is metal but I also had roof restrictions which I got around by swivelling the roof 90* to open.

Russ Croman's first observatory was a shed with a lift-off roof...

lift-off roof observatory

It was about as simple as it gets.

Cheers,

Keith

So, a roll-off roof. Literally.

Nice!

Martin, that's very interesting. How in the world did you did you do that? Do you have details?

Hi again folks.
Apologies for the delay in responding.

I replaced the original roof with an Aluminium roller shutter sheet normally used to enclose the back of pickups etc.

it is lightweight and has insulation incorporated within the hollow Aluminium slats.

I bent two "U" channels which the shutter slides in and fixed these to the framework of the shed.

I'll try to post a few detailed photos, but it may be spread over a few posts because I have no idea how to post multiple images.

Wonderful design solution. And, yes that was english. Have you encountered any problems opening and closing it?
