Hello sunfolk!
I'm strongly considering a solar filter purchase. I owned a PST last year (sold to fund another telescope) and loved it, but yearned for more contrast and tunability. Looking at the Lunt products (and having read almost *every* Lunt-related thread on CN ), the front filter 50mm double-stack interests me greatly for its price and flexibility (it would accompany me on vacation with my ZS66 travel scope).
However, I've seen the NEAF video interview with Andy Lunt, and am confused. He seems to say that only three items will be available this year: the LS60 and LS200 telescopes this summer, and a 160mm front filter later this year. "Another 9 products" would be available next year.
The Lunt vendors I have spoken to (just before NEAF) were under the impression that they would be getting 50mm front filters this summer, among many other products (e.g. the DP60 scope, etc). Is this now untrue?
Your thoughts are much appreciated.
Thank you!

Adam,
You should check out the Lunt Solar Systems group on yahoo and post any questions you have there for the speediest reply. They are very good about answering all questions posted.
Some of the Lunt team also frequent this CN forum and might reply to your question here as well.

Go Here:
http://www.luntsolarsystems-europe.com/content.php?catchoice1=99097&choice=99097
And look up Markus' email. He responds very quickly. I think he is in the US right now so it might take a day. He gets daily updates from Andy and will reply promptly and knowledgeably.
Reading these threads reminds me of a short Robert Frost poem the goes something like:
"We dance around the circle and suppose while the secret sits in the middle and knows."

Colinsk, thanks for the link to Markus' email -- I just wrote him with the following:

Hello!
I found your email address on the Lunt Solar website, hope you don't mind a direct inquiry.
I'm strongly considering a solar filter pre-order purchase, specifically the front filter 50mm in double-stack configuration (with BF600).
However, I've seen a video interview from NEAF with Andy Lunt, and am confused. In the video, he seems to say that only three items will be available this year: the LS60 and LS200 telescopes this summer, and a 160mm front filter later this year. "Another 9 products" would be available next year.

Is this now untrue? I would like to place a pre-order, but only if the 50mm front filters are expected within the next few months.
(As you know, your products are eagerly anticipated, and much discussed on web forums such as CloudyNights.com. If you have a moment to post an update in the Solar forum, I'm sure it will go a long way to securing more pre-orders.)
Your thoughts are much appreciated.
Thank you!

I just received a wonderfully quick reply from Markus @ Lunt.
Quote:
I was not at the Interview and did not see it, but I believe something came out completly wrong here.
All products getting shipped during the next few monthes, starting with 50 mm filter next month and many telescopes. best wishes Markus
So it seems that we're still on track for the release of products as per Lunt's website. Good news.
Cheers, Adam

Wow - that was quick.
Thanks!
That 60mm Ha scope looked extremely good - very nice finish.
I know the 60mm DP will "look" different but if it is executed anywhere as well as the design of the 60mm single pass - it should be extremely good.

Hello All,
Andy , Rikki and me did not see the Interview at CN and personaly I dont know what Andy told , but something must came over wrong, so Rikki forwardet this message to me, which confirms excactly what I told to everybody at NEAF
----- Original Message ----- From: Rikki To: Markus Ludes , Luntsolarsystems Europe Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2008 8:03 PM Subject: Re: questions about LS50 front filter delivery schedule
Hi Markus, Why don't you post on the cloudynights and yahoo the estimated schedule. It seems people are getting the wrong idea from Andy's interview. We have not been able to watch it yet.
By end of May shipping LS60THa, LS60TCaK, LS50FHa July shipping LS60THaDP, LS75FHa, LS100FHa, LS100THa and hopefully the LS200THaDP Thank You, Rikki Hocking Lunt Solar Systems 2520 N. Coyote Dr. #111 Tucson, AZ 85745 (520)344-7348
--------------------------------------
Now something more about NEAF . I am under hurry to pack up my boxes to ship to germany and leaving New Jersey in 1 hour , but I could read partly postings.
We have had at NEAF ready to show under sun the LS 60 CaK and the LS 50 F filter , I wanted to go out , but Andy stopped me, after he heard that a customer said about the $ 26,000 product of another vendor , the image was " ok" under the present condition , Andy did not like to hear same thing about our filters. I know there may have been minutes between , where the sky was good enough to show the potential , but we have had also much to do indoors.
I personaly helped assembling and testing the telescopes and filters the weekend before NEAF , in Tucson , so I am one of 3 people who has seen first light and I liked a lot what I saw.
I also saw that the image in the LS 60 Ha was to bright and Andy agreed with me , but 1,2 days before NEAF , we could not do anything to change or tune it , this takes some additional testings and about a week time , so it was not possible for us to show at NEAF the full potential of the LS 60 Ha. I was there when Andy Lunt told this to rather many customers who tried to push us going out. I understand that not everybody heard this , but there are out customers who know its the thruth.
Andy is now back in Tucson and working to make a few samples working perfectly to ship them out to some dealers and newsgroup loudspeakers for testing and giving away some first personal impression.
We have all mechanics under work, we have all glas in stock, many etalon plates and blocking filters and ITF are polished and coated , but Andy still have to polish a lot spacers to match the etalons together.
The company set up has been delayed by about 2 month from the city who asked for everything permissions and the landlord from whom we rent the factory got almost crazy , but thats citys have big open hands for fees they want .
Our production has been also delayed by about 2 month due the first optical and mechanical designer problems, till I took over with my expertise team in Germany the optical design and mechanical drawings. All Optics are designed and partly under production and partly in stock. We still optimising some technical designs on the LS 100 and LS 200 Telescope and the LS 60 Double Pass , but this completed during next 2 weeks , so we are in good shape and under good mode to keep the estimated delivery times for the first shipments.
We do not keep secrets , I believe you know and see that , no other company every gave away so open all technical info as Lunt , but we are all working , Alan Traino and me, we running no 2 companys the same time and cannot be always at any internet place to reply very quickly and Andy Lunt is working 7 days a week , partly deep into the night watching and controlling his optical babys.
Allow us the little delay we have right now due problems we could not see coming in December / January.
Our forecast was to start shipping sometimes in April, now we have it late may , so we catched up very well and our delay of some weeks is not really bad , at least not as bad as some posting in the internet
I am going home now to Germany and maybe able to read tomorrow night my next emails again, dont worry if you do not hear something from me next 2 days
all the best from the LUNT Team

Marcus,
Thanks for this answer. It clears up much of the confusion and especially sheds some light on what APPEARED to be a contradiction of what was said early in the year, and now.
*BLEEP* happens when just trying to get a new business off the ground. Perhaps many of us saw you and Andy as "seasoned" business owners and so not as prone to get tripped up over bureaucratic SNAFUs as you described?
I WILL say, the video of NEAF touting the (I presume largest) Blocking filter with the "T" ring has me drooling.

I for one would love to test and review a Lunt scope, as I was one of the "doubters" about what the PST could do (until I got it that is). Of course, if I really liked it, I would probably buy it, so that should be kept in mind . Clear skies to you.

Heck, Markus pretty much reproduced the Lunt "drawing board" right here on this forum! Amazing...
Obviously, I'm drooling for first light reports like everybody else, but all good things in all good time.

Three cheers for Markus and the Lunt team! If it takes a little longer to produce a top notch product, then so be it. I like what I hear, and I have faith in what both Andy and Markus have said. I shall be waiting patiently for my Lunt's to arrive.

Hello All
I got the follow email from Andy yesterday:
-----------------------------------------
Hi Markus,
After spending the entire day with the LS60 yesterday, we have fixed ALL the problems and have, what is in my opinion, a very nice image. Doublestacking was excellent with our own LS50. I saw surface filaments........The new system provides for very black backgrounds.
Andy

just to keep you updated on progress.
we going now in full production of LS 60 ha- telescope, LS 50 filter and LS 60 Cak telescope for quick deliverys and working on the other modells next week to get them in full serial production
thanks
