There is still a difference between my old CaK PST that was just repaired and the newer one. It is not as distinct as before, but the repaired one is a tiny bit dimmer. I had them mounted on a binocular mount and used identical eyepieces. I also swaped the scopes just to be sure. The performance is close enough that I am not going to send it back. If somebody thinks there is a reason I should contact Meade about this, please let me know.

Stick a webcam on it and a 2X barlow, then decide!

It's the only way to tell with the CaK scopes easily

Time to stick in a new iteration of the infamous -LIST-
There've been a bunch of new entries. This is a list of Hydrogen alpha PSTs, because of the "rust" issue most of the older ones have had. To my knowledge there's been no major problem with the CaK scopes, so I haven't added their serial numbers here. They are a tad hard to use with aging eyes, the violet color is so far up there and my eyes just aren't very sensitive to that energy level any more... Oh well...

I'd disagree with that statement Richard, - a considerable number of Ca PSTs seem to have astigmatism. But there's little point in listing the 'sick' Ca PSTs s/n, as it is not a 'batch' issue. (unlike the faulty ITF coatings) It's a great service you're doing for the Ha PST information BTW.

Richard

I would concur that this statement on the CaK PST is wrong, I know of around 12 that are defective, which out of the 14 people I know who have one, is a staggeringly high failure rate.

All had astigmatism, in one for or another.

This morning I had the possibility to check it for few minutes before going to work.

Now it works great. The image is noticeably sharper and the particulars on the Sun are much easyer to be seen than before the repair.

Hello, I'm Italian but I'm studing Spanish and have some friend in Spain.
The sentence is from a Spanish song, by Tunxtu.
It means something as: "People who are in a hurry, never see the heaven"

Hi Claudio. Thanks for the info about the Spanish sentence and sorry for the off-topic.

My wife is studying Italian and we visit your beautiful country very often. Napoli is our next target already booked for the beginning of March.

My favourite sentence in Italian language is: “Forza e coraggio che dopo aprile viene maggio !!!”

P.S.: my golden coated PST seems to work flalessly and no rust is visible at all through the objective, so far (fingers crossed).

Well, so we will try to don't exaggerate with the OT.

Meanwhile, here is still cloudy but yesterday there were half an hour of sun and I managed to check the Sun again with a 20mm SWA eyepiece, that works great with PST.

Napoli is a nice city.
If you go, try to have a trip to the top of Vesuvio volcano: it's a very impressive place.
There is an old astronomical observatory somewhere on the mountain but I don't remember exactly where.

To stay In Topic, in Napoli there is one of the few modern museums of science in Italy:
http://www.cittadellascienza.it/

An interesting one is in Firenze, where you can see the original telescope by Galileo.

Thanks for the info Claudio. I'll try to visit the science museum of Napoli and of course the Vesuvio.

It seems to me that a 20mm eyepiece in the PST is too long focal lenght and not too much fine details will be seen with this magnification (20X). With my replaced "golden coated" PST I can use the TV Nagler zoom 3-6 at 5mm position (80X) and even sometimes at 4mm (100X). Now I got used to this magnification and I'm very happy with the quantity of details I can get from this little solar scope. Try with a shorter focal lenght eyepiece. I even sell my 18mm CEMAX eyepiece as solar images that it rendered were too small for my tastes.

Nick & Andy:
I guess I haven't been paying much attention to the CaK PSTs and the astigmatism problem evaded my notice! Thanks for the head's up!
My club has one of them but I haven't spent much time using it, my eyes just aren't very sensitive up at that color anymore so I can't see much. I'd have to have a chilled black bag (with vent holes so I can breathe) to put my head & the eyepiece into in order to use it much. It's a tough little scope...

Yes, you are right, but I had only few time to try my PST since it was cloudy. I was experimenting with different EPs, but the seeing was not good.

So, the image in the 20mm was steady enough and very crisp (much more crisp and detailed than I remember it was before the PST was repaired).
I tried a GSO Plossl 15mm but there is a glare in the EP (the 20mm Burgess has not this glare, it seems a better quality EP).

I tried also the Planetary 7mm but when I put it into the focuser the seeing was not god and the clouds where rolling over, so I had no way and no time to go up with magnification.

I remember I was disappointed using high magnification before the reparation, but now the image seems crisper and more detailed, so I had to try.
Just waiting for the right conditions.

Meanwhile, the guy who sold me his PST did not imagine it had some problems, while the increasing in quality after it was fixed is just great.
I also heard other people in Italy that say they tried different PSTs and found one working better than another one. I guess they tried a "rusty" one.
I think the problem of "rust" is not enough known here.

or maybe it's astigmatism? earlier in this topic I did some comparising of two different PST's, blue and gold objective lenses. Both units had not the rustproblem, but this was a prism problem.

Can I bud in a sec, how do you determine the magnification, mine for example: PST w/Barlow 2x and Vixen 8-24, assume I'm at the 8mm setting, what would my magnification be and what is the formula?..Thank you in advance?...

Hi Stephen,
I believe the focal length of the PST is 400mm so...
400mm/8mm ep = 50x...with 2x barlow= 100x
Does that sound right to you?
