update: 95660 was mailed to Meade on 2-13-08 They received it on 3-5-08. I waited 7 weeks and called for first time. They promised in 4 weeks, by May 1 08. I have now been told that my scope is vacationing in Mexico and it hasnt even sent me a post card. No news as to when I will receive it. Many American jobs were lost, I wont be buying Meade any more.

Dale: That sounds like a good idea. Where would this database be stored? How would the individuals enter their data. How would the data be presented? I'm just full of questions!
Good questions!
Answered in order:
1) I run my own server (ie, I own the hardware... it's mine... not a shared web host or anything like that) that's housed in a data center outside of Washington DC. I host my own and a few friends' websites on it and what not and have off-site backups to another server of mine on the west coast. The database would live on that and be presented as web page in a user-friendly way. My server lives at http://elemental.org/
2) Entering data - It would be done through a form, of course... and have fields patterned after your own SN/status/comments style of entries - which seems to work out well.
Giving the ability to update an existing entry (ie, after a repair is made or condition of a PST worsens) is the tricky part, because you really only want the person who originally made the entry to be able to change it (so no one who is being an a-s-s or has ulterior motives could vandalize an entry.) For that, a simple, unobtrusive password would can be chosen at the time of first entry (based on the PST's serial number.) The person will just have to enter that password whenever they wish to update the status of their PST. In the case that a PST changes ownership and the new owner wants to update that PST's entry (if it already exists in the database) they could email me with some convincing evidence and they can be granted access.
3) Presentation - It can be basic and clean - when one goes to the page it'll just spit out all existing entries with pagination (say, 10 or 15 entries per page). One could also search for a specific PST serial number, or on the comments or whatever fields. Of course, links can be provided back to this forum for discussion on the topic.
I'm on call this weekend and am therefore tethered to the computer (no stargazing for me) ... so I can whip up something to build on.

Here is the latest in my "Solar Scope Saga"
IT'S HERE!
Just delivered by UPS. It has a new pretty blue objective. I really appreciate the call they (didn't) make to let me know it was done and on it's way, just like they said they would.
Of course it's cloudy and I don't have an eyepiece to test it out with, but I'll work on that in the next couple of days.
96682 sick - "$pace @ce" in Vancouver, Washington. Repaired, blue objective.

PS, my scope said to tell all you owners with scopes vacationing in Mexico, "Buenas Dias", and that they had a great Cinco de Mayo.

So I sent my PST in on Feb 8. I have called a few times to check in. I called this weekend and they told me a few more weeks at most. I asked if they would notify me when they sent it out. They said, "yes, by email".
I only had to wait 2 days because I received it today, without an email notices.
99606 now has a pretty blue objective.

I received scope #97193 the other day. Nice clear blue objective, but I think it has a bit of astigmatism, as there is a faint halo around the left side of the sun when I focus.
Other than that, it is awesome! I did get some good views in yesterday, but the sun is too quiet to tell right now. I hope for a clear (and active) day today. \o/

My Pst was returned to me today. I was able to do a short test on the sun and the tuning and focus knobs seem just fine, and the new lens (objective) is fantastic. The scope number was 95660, so Mike Kelly says Meade did a good job and He is happy with the way it was repaired. Because it didn't end up in Mexico, I was very glad to get my "made in the U.S.A." scope back from Irving, and the job was done right.
Thanks for all your help Cloudy Nights

I've updated the sticky thread for the PST issues, adding the database for the list and this thread for the serial number discussions.

Hi there, I've recieved a message from my dealer here in Spain that he already has my PST in his hands, I hope in a couple of days I'm posting an image of the old and the new lenses together for comparison. And also hope I haven't got to send a new rusty one. I sent it to the dealer in March 25 so just passed two months. TWO MONTHS FILLED WITH RAIN AND CLOUDS!! so nothing about astronomy for more than two months day or night. I think I'm gonna get crazy... Regards, Fernando

Hello, I'm happy to say that AT LAST!! my PST has arrived home safely (I hope). Now the objective looks blue and almost transparent, I can see the bottom of the scope, I couldn't before with the silver-blue coatings.
An image of the before and after status. Now waiting for the clear skys and job to coincide, (not that easy), and a test.
Regards, Fernando
PS: Mine was #100122

Thanks for the report, Fernando! I'm particularly glad you put the comparison photos in your post. Now we can all see what a properly repaired objective looks like. Now all we need are some sunspots, eh? Maybe a giant prominence... Congratulations! Rich

I wish, I wish, but I took it out to test it on friday and barely could see the Sun among the clouds, and the wind was very anoying, so just visual test. It looks good, I couldn't say there is any improvement over the previous images. The only con is that they scratched the eyepiece barrel, seems like they used a ¿Stilson? wrench (I don't know it's english name, thouse used to tighten tubes), the con is that now I can dismount it to clean the prism. I'll try some flares and spots any clear morning, but I don't promise anything...

A Stilson wrench is a "pipe wrench" and I think the work for tube you are looking for is "pipe". Half of the people I work with speak Spanish as their primary language and I wish I could communicate as well as you do!
