Sidewalk PST Astronomy
      #2089390 - 01/02/08 09:04 AM Attachment (30 downloads)

Hello all and best wishes for this year!
I have some idea's to do some sidewalk astronomy with my PST again and imaging with such low sun is now very difficult. Have several eyepieces now and I was wondering...does annyone has some expirience with people watching through a PST the first time, should I use my 9,7mm plossl or is less magnification better? like a 12,4 or a 18mm plossl?. I have only had alot of kids watching through it. We also wanna do some advertising for upcoming Starwatching day's in Holland and Belgium.
Thanks annyway,
greetz emiel

Thanks, but it's an old picture from oktober, 2006, some 120 kids from 6 till 12 years old watched some litle proms that afternoon. They had a space-theme at school that week.
Thanx Ralph, I will take the 18mm with me too!

Obviously people's focus changes from eye to eye, and also you muct impress upon them that looking at the Sun is exceptionally dangerous, with any telescope...kids can easily think they are invincible and just point anything sunward...

One tip I have used is a pocket TV, connected to a Meade EEP for solar viewing. Works perfectly with CaK, and if you add a moon filter to the EEP, it works well in H-A. That way everyone easily sees a lot, proms, filaments etc, with no change in focus, and you get home the message that straight through viewing, unless with special equipment is a no no..

Great work Emiel though...outreach is so important!

safety becomes a first issue!
I have to carry my scope for 1 kilometer, so having a tv monitor with me, that would be to much...I'm just a little boy...

I know this sounds really wishy washy; but the EP you need to use will depend more on seeing conditions than anything else. Next will be how experienced the observer is at viewing the sun and the rather small proms that are on the sun.

I do outreach stuff on a regular basis. My club has a PST and I have a DS SM40. It is quite common for on person to get very excited about seeing a prom while the next person to look thru the EP says they see nothing

I generally tell folks to imagine the solar disk is the face of a clock and look for the prom around 9:30 (or where ever it is). Some folks will say look at 9:28 while others will say they see nothing.

In general I start out with a low power EP, but if seeing is good I will bump up the magnification. However I am always quick to lower the magnification if folks start to say they cant see anything.

Best of luck with your out reach program. For me it is always worth it when I see the look on a kids face after they have seen a prom real time for the first time.

I would also get a black opaque cloth to put over the viewers heads it helps a lot.

Nice. The club I'm in did a few sidewalk solar viewing sessions a while back. Here is an image from 2005.

In my experience, to show ordinary people the view of the Sun through my PST, the best eyepiece is one with a wide angle of view and long eye relief. With that even people wearing spectacle can see the full view. With a very bright Sun, a 9 mm eyepiece is ideal and 15 mm would be better for a weak Sun.
Also it would be much more comfortable if you fit your PST with a Sun shield which you can either buy or build your own like what I have done.

Sunshields are nice. I have a homemade one myself that a friend made for me. But blocking the stray light from all around the eyes by using a cloth really makes the difference between seeing details and seeing an amazing amount of detail. So I tend to use both.

Good idea on packing your t-shirt, Emiel. I'd also suggest bringing a few eyepieces that way you're prepared for various seeing conditions. If I had to choose only one to take that into consideration, I guess I'd go with a 12mm. I prefer an 8 or 9mm plossl if conditions allow. Or better yet, a zoom eyepiece.

I use a 10mm Plössl (came with the Orion telescope) and it allows full disk viewing, but the eye relief is just miserable. I'm stuck with that for now though as I can't afford to spend anything for a longer eye relief eyepiece in the same (or close to the same) focal length.

I have used a 4mm Radian, and the eye relief is no problem, naturally. But 100x seems to be more than the PST wants to give up.

Also, I firmly believe some sort of equatorial mount is nearly indispensible for working with groups, especially kids.

Thanks, Dave...my plan was to set it up a GP mount...that mount of the picture before was from 2006. And I have a low platform/crate for kids to stand on
