Hello everyone,
My new Meade electronic ep arrived today. I took out the PST today and tried out the gadget. I remember a couple years back I had on of these, but I used it with a high resolution BW security monitor. I need another ones of these as the small RCA b/w TV I used this afternoon was not near as good as a security monitor. The old Sony and Philips monitors I had really brought out definition back n the day, and I could adjust the gain on the monitor if I remember correctly. So.....I am off to order a monitor. By the way, the Sun was just awesome today. Did anyone see that tiny bright patch off by itself? Is that another active region forming? I saw it on the EEP first, but then I saw it visually. I saw filaments just like everyone else, but I wanted to see if you guys saw that other small spot. It looked like it was coming around the bend of the Sun. I have not tried out my Imaging Source DMK monochrome camera, but I think I will have to shorten the nose anyways for it to come to focus. First things first though...monitor for the EEP.

Can you use a computer with the EEP? Can you use the EEP with a USB chord? A computer would allow you to record while watching the computer Screen/monitor. That is what many solar observers do to capture images with webcams.

Stephen and all,
Is there an adapter to use it with a computer? I had a snappy frame grabber one time, and I so wish I had kept it. I think there is another frame grabber software out there though. Maybe we can finally get together and figure it out. I think it would make some great pictures if we can get it to work with the old puter as my little boy Owen calls it.

I picked up an old snappy on the big auction site. This even by today's standards is a very good frame grabber. I just have to use a usb to paral. adapter to hook it to my computers. I used one once before, and it was very easy to capture the live shots of the sun. Not a bad little toy. For the Sanppy's, I have a patch that will make them work with XP. I don't think one exists for Vista.

Stephen,
Let me see if I can get this new Snappy going, and if it works for me like my old one did, we can try to find a snappy module for you. I see them for 5-10 dollars sometimes. I just bought a brand new never used one for 15.00 If I get a good thing going here, I will bring you a disk with the software and find you a module. Then you can start capturing this stuff for a very low cost. You have the most expensive part, the EEP already. In the meantime, if you are not familiar with Snappy, do a search and read about it. I think it is perfect for this application!

What's different from Easycap, almost seems like the same thing...

A great option is to use an Analog to Digital converter like a Canopus, see THIS. I used one to convert to digital on the fly with the Meade EEP using my Mac. I guess firewire is not as ubiquitous on PC's as it is on Macs but I assume there must be some A/D converters out there that use USB. Firewire is still (as I understand it) preferred for this application (over USB2) because of the sustained burst rates.
Alternatively, if you have a digital camcorder (I have a Canon Elura) you can most likely use that to convert your signal from the EEP to digital and record on tape - then capture onto your PC with software like Registax I presume? Again, I use a Mac and Astro IIDC so I'm not quite sure what the PC guys use.
Not sure what is still out there for affordable frame grabbers - with the move away from video these things have become scarce. You might also ask around in the assisted viewing forum - those guys are video fanatics but mostly interested in live view video.
