I observed a very tendril-ly (new word) prom today - very large. I've got to get my solar directions right because I really don't know which official side of the sun it was on (it was at about 9:00 position as viewed w/ the PST) at about 9:45 am Pacific Time. Anyone else view it?? I am going to have to wait till tonight to post my drawing.

Maybe this will help. For PST. solar orientation
Nothing but clouds & rain here today. We actually had a thunder storm this morning. Very rare here in February.

scott thanks for the link. I know that Erika posted a link to a solar orientation page when I first started (not long ago) but I was too interested in just getting started drawing and not getting bogged down in the details that I figured I would learn as I went. This was one of those things that I knew I should learn but figured in time..
I'm going to print out a copy of the linked image though so that I can keep it with my solar sketching stuff!

Dee, the easy way about it is that you let the Sun drift out of your FOV. The direction of drift is west. North for the PST is always counterclockwise from west. In other words, if drift (west) is to the left, north will be at the bottom.

My pleasure. Michael (Special Ed) as well as Nytecam were big helps while I was trying to drill orientations into my head for different celestial objects as well as different scopes.

Post away there is no such thing as a bad sketch or pic. Look at some of my afocal shots I posted. Not the best but its a start. I think everyone enjoys each others shots and sketches. We're just a bunch of solar junkies......

Hello Dee, I just received my Solarmax 6O double stacked yesterday and viewed the sun in Ha for the first time. The view was just amazing!! Here is my poor attempt at imaging the prom you are talking about.

Hi Dee, Thanks very much. Your drawing is right on the mark! I think, based on a few hours observation, that visual is extremely nice and being able to draw what you see is an art. A win/win situation!
