Rob, I think the best bet, if you are concerned is to speak directly to the Lunt guys. I spoke to Markus a week or so ago, and found him good to talk to, and very passionate about quality on the products. I am sure the guys who post here, would be happy to address your issues.

Nick, I agree with you on this. I corresponded by e-mail and also talked with Rikki before ordering and she was always quick to respond, very helpfull with my questions and she never made any unrealistic promisses on delivery.

on another issue- do you intend to do any photography with your Solar Scope or are you visual only ?

Best regards
Lihu

Erm...do you have the right person...?

Me...visual only... erm...

Check out any of my posts with an attachment over the past 3 months, plenty of solarscope images

Sorry Nick,
I am new to this forum and I didn't have time to do my homework
I looked you up now and your photos are awsome

Do you think a Cannon EOS 40D may be successfully used for solar imaging or should I try the DSI II Pro (monochrome CCD imager) first?
I know the Canon will have the Bayer "GB" missing pixels problem but it still has a lot more pixels than the DSI.
So , what do you think

I'll chime in with this- If Lunt were a publicly traded company, I'd pick up some shares.

I'd probably buy some as well, as I think they will eventually be making some very nice products.

Rikki, Markus and Andy have been very forthcomming with me and I am not concerned. When I placed my order Rikki told me she would not give me a date as it was too far away and she could only guess.

But, I also am on the AP waiting list for a 160mm f7.5 StarFire EDF.

Don't you think that when you "pre-order" a non-existent product that you should anticipate these things? Nobody committed to having a scope to you by some date certain. Lunt was very up front about the fact that the designs were not even done yet when they started accepting pre-orders. I can understand your frustration, nobody likes to wait. But, unless a new company is supposed to develop their products in secret and only announce them when they are ready to ship, some delays are almost certain. If you can't tolerate that, then you should be ordering products that are already in production rather than pre-ordering new unreleased products sight unseen.

Mike K is right on target with that. Some of the mailbox watching posts both here and on the Lunt Yahoo group are amazing, and seem to completely disregard the fact that this has been a preorder scenario from the start and no delivery date promises have ever been made.

Human nature, I guess.

In response to the 40D vs DSI question, personally I would not use either. The Canon is great for large whole disc shots, but they are single shot, (unless you take lots very quickly and stack those, which with the EOS would be a lot of processing and HDD space), DSI, I have one, and whilst they are superb guide cams, and the larger format ones, not half bad imaging cams, I still think that the high frame rate webcam/DMK/Lumenera approach takes some beating for hi res in particular, and even for full disc, via compositing.

Just my 2 cents...but not really in line with this thread...

(apart from the fact that I will be using that approach for imaging when my Lunt scope arrives)

Fine, but then why not a "notification list" that holds your place without requiring you to make a deposit until you "pre-order" a scope that is developed and ready to enter a production run?

It is not my intention to open up yet another "praise or condemn the business model of a company like A-P" discussion but it occurs to me that the current situation with Lunt pre-orders illustrates nicely the wisdom of AP's approach to launching new products (as one example).

Yes, the AP model works well for an established business but those of us who pre-ordered hopefully realize we are funding R&D for a new product line. Personally air spaced etalons are my second least favorite technology for solar viewing. However, the price to value ratio of the Lunts seems the best if you are willing to preorder.

Owining a PST and a Lunt is not going to stop me from getting a Solar Spectrum. But the holey grail is a Zeiss universal birefringent filter. I don't think I will ever find one so I guess I will have to make one when I retire.

Let's hope it's not too "Holey" Colin.

For me, so far, the SF70 was pretty close to perfection...have yet to try a Daystar, or a Solar Spectrum (both on the To Do list)

Colin, I’ve been told that currently the only known source for birefringent filters is a company in Nanjing, China, the Nanjing Optical Instruments Factory.

Pat, I have been in contact with them and I am not really sure if they are interested in bulding more filters unless price is no object.

Nick, I should use spell check more often.

Just to follow up out of curiosity, where and when was it stated (or even implied) by anyone at Lunt that a pre-order deposit would be used to fund R&D to develop products?

I think Lunt should at least ship those products like LS50 or LS50DS filter first to keep the ball rolling instead of postpone and postpone and postpone the delivery date and kept us waiting which may open to more speculation and frustration .

I remember during coronado old days (2002-2003) the sm40 filter was offered to the market first, shipped as well...
This gives us the chance to review their sm40 products and news about it being good spread fast and suddenly those who waiting for it (for 6 months) , me included felt that it's absolutely worth waiting.

As for Lunt ,product like those double pass telescope which they are not satisfied with their initial test could hold on on delivery date but not those LS50 and LS50DS.

Holding on to all their product line longer gives us an impression that they are not confident with their image quality and open to speculation that perhaps their image quality could not match those coronado line of sm40 filters hence the delay to try to improve on the image quality which could chase away potential buyers.

They should at least shipped the LS50 so that a review of it could be make. If the review is good.. it further strengthen
their credibility and at least we are confident that our long waiting time is absolutely worthwhile.

Hello Everybody,

I am back , finaly. Sorry for my silent but last week till yesterday I was ultrabusy with Businesspartners who visit me from around the world and I was working every day till late after midnight ,also on the Lunt stuff.

We prepair a detailed report to be posted at the Lunt Yahoo Group.

LS 50 Filters rolling , they are shipped every day , I dont know if my first dealer who placest the first order of any dealer has delivered yet to his customer, but he could , he have 50 mm filters and Cak scopes since last saturday .
Rikki told me, that every single day this week filters got shipped , not large numbers , but small numbers, Tucson is not fully sunny I heard for final testing. I am waiting for shipments too.
Last night Andy told me that Russ and Scott Roberts has been at Lunt and tested some stuff and the got the wow factor to see.

We have dealers all around the world and we decited to ship to every dealer first a sample and then start with delivery in chronolocigal order. I am sorry if your dealer has not yet received something. We have dealers who started orders in january and those who started first orders in may , some have to wait somewhat longer then others.

We ship every day, but we cannot ship to all at once, please understand.

again , watch the Lunt Yahoo group for the news posting

thanks, back to work

Well, It looks like I will have to take another mortgage on the house
Which one would you personally prefer for a LUNT 60 DS, DMK or Lumenera ?
Thanks for helping

DMK's are very good value for money. A bit less sensitive than the Lumenera, but for £200 or so (around $430 I think), they are remarkable value for money.

Lunt...I am after the 200mm CaK at some point, so don't talk to me about mortgages...

Nick,
Thanks - I'll look into the DMK line.
Since my scope is not going to materialize before February 2009 - I can defer the mortgage till then

Nick, I think you should consider the rear mounted CaK blocking filter. You have some scopes it will work well on. Below 100mm they are not using a ERF. It sounds like a good inexpensive solution for you.

I don't know how long the wait list is for the but Rikki tells me they are already shipping the CaK diagonals.
