The way I understand it it was the Dark Blue objectives that went bad and at first started getting replaced with gold then later with the light blue objective. Reading through this thread again I found a couple of other gold objectives that had failed.

Quote:

As far as I know yours is the first report of a bad gold objective.

Can you describe how it started to fail? Do you have a picture?

No pics...sorry.

I'd been on a very tight work schedule, but was finally about to score a PST "nooner" (ahhhh... solar nirvana once again). Alas it was not going to happen quite so easily, as the view was uncharacteristically devoid of detail.

A quick examination revealed the culprit: a somewhat foggy, "rust" had begun taking over the objective (arrrgh!) It had always been stored in an equipment-friendly environment (my other Coronado stuff... some older than the PST... exhibit no such degradation).

It had been several months since my previous PST outing and, to be honest, it likely had already been breaking down at that point but I did not realize it (or examine) at that time.

Quote:

#95028??, did they start renumbering them or did they take old ones and just change the objectives or was it already repaired once?...

I am the original owner of this one... it was the first and only repair and was returned with the same serial number.

Oh yeah... RE the repair: I AM a happy camper, but for the lack of time to use it( sigh!)

PS: A big thank you to all here in the CloudyNights Solar forum for helping me maintain my daily solar "fix" (I am reduced to lurking these days)!

Ok, this thread is to make a list of PST serial numbers, not a general discussion of them. Feel free to start a new thread, but leave this one to its purpose.

Add Serial #99269, rust on lens, purchased new in October 2005. Returned to Meade 1/6/09. Less than 1 minute wait for CSR and quoted 6-8 weeks for return.

My PST #99515 completely rusted over at about age 26 months. I had it repaired in December 2008. It took 7 weeks from the first phone call to having the repaired scope back in my hands.

Meade returned my PST #99269 this week with the lens replacement, it was a eight week turnaround. First impressions, my Televue plossls or the originally supplied 20KE will no longer achieve focus where they did prior to the fix. Seems to lack a sufficient in focus now. Using a SV26 plossl I did reach sharp focus and in moments of good seeing detail was visible across the full solar disk. Small prom's were dim but nothing noteworthy yesterday. Curious if any one else has noticed a change in the focus range.

No, sorry to hear that, I didn't have any focus problem, mine was repaired in Germany.
¿Have you tried with a barlow?
¿Did they change the objective to a blue one (if it was previously gold)?

Add SSN 99470 to the list.

Dug out my PST after a year of not using. Hoped to use it to welcome the end of the solar minimum. I had suspected it before (the rust), but now more obvious and affects the view. Will be contacting Meade.
