I'm interested in the 60mm Lunt solar telescopes, specifically the LS60THa, but I'm not sure what to make of some of the choices on offer.
What I'd like to know is:
1) what is the "at-the-eyepiece" difference between the B600 and B1200 blocking filters?
2) what additional advantage does the DS50, the Double-Stacked 50 Etalon, give you? It adds considerably to the final price - can I do without it?
3) If I'm interested in observing, possibly sketching, but not necessarily photographing, is there a "best fit" from all the possibilities?

1. The B1200 gives you a wider field of view, about double the width of the sun.
2. More surface contrast. It can be added later.
3. Let your budget decide.

The larger BF is most critical for photography, but many prefer it for visual as well. For the relatively small price difference, preserve the future flexibility and value of your scope by getting the BF1200.
Double-stacking, however, appears to be of greatest benefit to visual observers. I thought it best to get mine double-stacked at the factory, and have been very pleased. As Colin points out, you can add the second filter later, as well. This would give you a single-stacked 60mm to play with somewhat earlier....I would still wait for a "factory match", though....

Can the double-stacked filter be added on by the user? Or would I have to send the scope to Lunt to get it Double-Stacked?

You can just purchase the double stack filter yourself, but will most likely get more detail from a filter that has been chosen by Lunt to work best with what you have.

I believe that Andy Lunt has posted that they can now match 50mm fllters to a 60mm scope without returning the scope.
Still, I'd prefer a match done in real time, at the factory...

Hi Bruce,
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit Lunt while on vacation in Arizona. I specifically wanted to check out a double-stack configuration on my LS-60.
As it turns out, I was more impressed with the visual difference between my original B600 and the B1200. Yes the double-stack does make surface detail easier to see. However, I could see prominences better using a B1200. Since that was more important to me, that's the option I went with.
Of course, if one can afford the B1200, a double-stack setup, and perhaps the pressure tuner...
However, my bride demands that we eat regularly, so my list of options went from three to one. I chose the one that provided the most 'bang' for my particular buck.

I should have added that accessories that require back focus will make a B1200 a requirement. Like DSLRs and Binoviewers.
