Garrett Optics 28x110
      #3452634 - 11/17/09 04:36 AM

Hello Everyone,
It has been long time to post a mini review on CN. Well, I ordered Garrett Optics Signature Series 28x110 mid of last month and received in about a week and a half due to the back order.

Packing was excellent but I guess the FedEx guy might dropped it and therefore the binocular was slightly out of collimation.

The Fit and finish as everyone said is #1. So, I took it out after fourth day under the sky. Within a half an hour, It impressed me and I had to admit that the optics are very good. I could see some ghosting perhaps one or more optics are not fully multicoated or like I said earlier that the prism may be shifted little bit while delivering the goods.

I called Zack and man, he knows how to handle customers. He assured me that as soon he gets the binocular back, he will send another one within a day or two. So, I am waiting for it. I will post the review when I get it.
Lastly, Thanks to EDZ of his valuable comments on GO 28x110

Oh no! I am waiting for my GO 28x110 as I ordered them 1 week ago but they are retained in Spanish Customs until I fill and pay for the customs invoice.
It'd be really a pain if they are out of collimation or feature any other defect because shipping USA-Spain is really expensive plus customs, etc...
I need the best of the luck.

Ghosting? Can you describe more what 've seen? I am planning a 22x85 and am trying to get as much information as a can.

About the coatings : yesterday i've noticed something strange in my TS Marine 15x70 wich is of thesame type bino.
In one of the barrels looking through the objective glas at a certain angle a spotlight looks scary white. When i do thesame in the other barrel the reflection is definately green.
shining with a flashlight i can see green reflections but also some yellowish-white ones. In the other barrel all reflections (a lot) show green.
What to think? A prims that is not coated, only one?

Anyhow, congrats on the purchase and i sure am looking forward for the review to come

I didn't know about this shop plus I haven't found any other cheaper tripod which meet these huge binos. Also, dollar-euro exchange rate is quite good at this moment.
GO 28x110+S5000 Tripod cost 703€ shipped plus ~21% of custom fee. Not bad price but risky business as shipping process could damage lenses. Lets hope this issue will not happen.

reflections can be tricky to make sure you are observing the SAME reflection from both barrels.

The Kunming series8 15x70 is a cemented doublet. that means the surfaces of the objective that are cemented together would not be coated. At the proper angle, using a flashlight reflection, you would see that surface as a white reflection. It is not detrimental.

That's indeed seems like a good price. Do you have to pay import taxes too in Spain, In Belgium we have about 4% import taxes on optics
But Teleskope service in Germany is an great option as well. They are a very reliable source and ship very quickly.
I ordered my TS Marine on a Wednesdayevening and it arrived allready the next Friday at noon!

Anyhow If it ships with UPS well they a are quite good at it. I would not worry about a broken lens.
It's the collimation that may be an issue. Because in the distributing process packets must be able to 'survive' a fall from 0,5 m or even 0,75m i believe. I saw that once on a documentary about an UPS distribution center in the US.
However I was very surprised to see my Obsession arrive at the time in such a good conditions. You really could not tell that those boxes made a big overseas trip...quite remarkable , really...

True, i may not jump to conclusions but the fact remains both barrels don't act thesame when shine light on them from thesame angle..and that surprises me a bit...

Ortensio.... Broken lenses due shipment process is something that I wouldn't worry about, very rare situation. Hopefully, they'll arrive perfect, but if those are a bit miscollimated, dont worry, collimating them is not very difficult and it is a lot cheaper than sending them back. A lot of people here can instruct you in that matter.
Good luck!

Hey Guys,
Garrett Optics Have sent the Bino and I Received the Tracking information.
When I said the a little ghosting what it means that one barrel showed me clear and the another one showed me a very little out of focus. Once you start observing with two eyes, you can see a "VERY" little ghosting. For example, I looked at the Jupiter and it show me double limb.
Well, I wait for another one to test it.

As I said in my first impression. It may be because of shipping not the binocular has a flaws.

I confirm that mine (20x110) that I received this year where carefully packed and perfectly collimated. I noticed a subtle ghosting on very bright objects (Jupiter, Saturn or Vega) but really nothing to worry about. I guess I can easily eliminate it by fine tuning the collimation which I didn't dare to touch yet.

Wow, only 4% import taxes That percentage would have been a real bargain to me.

It is great reading that it is possible collimating binos by myself with forum's help. I didn't know about this point as I am rookie on binoculars astronomy.

Thanks for all your answers regarding to my post.

Edited: I still don't know the exact amount for Customs fee but I'll be posting it here as soon as I was told.

In Spain VAT is 16%, as far as I know agent is not necessary but the total amount is around 21% of the declared price. To be honest it is not strange that people try to deceive cutstoms... 21% is a robbery.

I can live with the 21%, but what really bothers me is paying it also on the shipping cost and not just the value of the item I'm importing.

If that is true its a double robbery. 21% is 1/5 of the products value, its waaaaaaayyyyy too much (edited: for nothing in return). No idea what is the service customs gives me for the additional 5% over the 16% nominal VAT in Spain...
