I thought long and hard before posting this and the positives outweigh the negatives. Here is my unqualified, first-blush, off-the-top-of-my-head list (no particular order, I'm NOT a detail-oriented guy):
Mizar Albireo gamma And beta Mon rho Ori sigma Ori lambda Ori 2 CVn eta Cas iota Cas iota Cnc zeta Cnc gamma Leo (isn't that the gold-gold, bright pair?) alpha CVn h3945 in CMa delta Cep phi Tau Struve 2816 iota Tri (....others NOT on the top of my head! )
How about you? What's on YOUR list?

I like so many, and the lists above are great so I won't duplicate (and won't tie myself to a specific few in the process). However, I will mention (because I didn't notice it listed yet) Zeta Persei (STF 464) --- a nice little 5-star multiple with a 2.85 mag primary and 9.16mag companion at about 13" distance, and three more companions of magnitudes 9.96, 10.44, and 11.24 ranging out to 120.4".
No spectacular color contrasts, and the companions are rather faint -- but on a crisp clear night it has a certain satisfying quality to it, like a mini-constellation just hoping to be noticed and penciled in.

Rigel is not my favorite, but my all-time double...... ...in first days with my telescope he manage to fool me for few days.....i did not know what to expect so i overlooked this tiny dot near Rigel ...after few days i realize that i saw two components few days ago.
My favourite double is trapezium....i spend much time with it ,wondering will it reward me with E component (my scope is on the edge of that). Few days ago i saw Double double for first time...it is also nice sight, split all with 100x and they all four fit in my 220x FOV so i enjoy sight for few minutes.

I've seen the E and F stars of the Trapezium a number of time in a 6-inch when the seeing's good. Two stars you ought to look for soon though will provide you with a splash of color, namely Omicron-1 Cygni and 61 Cygni. The first is an optical triple, meaning the stars merely are along the same light of sight from the Earth, but they are a orange, white and blue. 61 Cygni is two orange dwarfs that really show a vivid orange color, like a couple of oranges in space. I enjoy looking at Epsilon Lyrae very much too.

I like to split doubles at the lowest possible magnification to test the seeing and the optics (6" and 7"). In this regard, I have some favorite candidates:
- Rigel (40x) - Epsilon 1/2 Lyrae (46x) - Castor (40x) - Ras Algethi (55x) - alpha Piscorum (91x) - 52 Ori (157x) - 16 Vulpeculae (196x)

I am a newbie to doubles after years of observing DSOs and planets.Just last week I found Almach and Sigma Orionis to name a few and I am hooked.I have spent the last few days studing and plotting on my charts using the info of favorites here.It will probably take me a year before I can list mine.

Struve 2470 and Struve 2474 in Lyra are a nice "double-double" in a low power field.
Ditto for Xi Sco and Struve 1999, Struve A7 and Struve 401.
Always find myself going to 61 Cyg, Alberio, Eta Cas (Achird), Izar, and Polaris as well.
One of these days I'll finally split Antares.

My two favorite doubles are Castor and Pollux in Gemini (don't laugh...I refer to them as a "double"), and also Alberio in Cygnus.
The "twins" always appear to me as a pair of eyes staring at me! Naturally, I can only enjoy them naked eye!

Hello...
I've been into Amateur Astronomy for 44 years and have owned 20 telescopes of all types.
The closest double I have ever seen was the Companion of Polaris, whatever that is called.
I know that there are many doubles closer than this, but I'm not interested in seeking them out, because this is as close as I care to shoot for...I like a little space between my doubles!
(Alberio is nice!)
Here's a shot of me with my 20" f/5 Obsession back in 2000.

My favorite double is my only double, for time being. It's the "Double Double"
Never chased doubles before until I attended Stellafane 2007.
I had my 4.25" F/7.4 which I affectionately call the PeaShooter.
While I build and own lots of telescopes, I am not much of an astronomer. So, I depend on my buddies to help point out things to look at.
Wayne pointed my tiny scope at the Double Double and let out a "Wow!" that most everyone could hear.
"Art this is one fine scope!"
Now I am hooked!

I have looked at many double stars, but it hasn't been until recently that I have actually taken the time to enjoy and observe the many doubles out there. However, in this short time that I have taken the time to enjoy and fully observe these doubles, so far here are those that I enjoy the most:
Eta Persei Eta Cassiopeia Struve 163 Iota Cassiopeia (triple) Albireo Almaak

Well, heck, let's add 17 Virginis (STF1636). The first time I saw this, and subsequent times as well, I have seen the secondary as brownish!

Thanks for starting and responding to this thread .... very, very helpful.
I may have missed it but I did not notice Eta Orionis in the lists. I find this frustratingly difficult to split with my 4" refractor ... yet others tell me that it should be fairly easy with a 4"!!! I would estimate that I manage to confidently split Eta Orionis only every 6-8 attempts, even when I would rate seeing as reasonable/good. I recently purchased a CPC-11 and so far have only tried to split it once ... with success (what!) ... but then seeing was only average at best.
I would appreciate any observing clues and comment about splitting Eta Orionis.

I'm really glad you mentioned this last one, South 437. I have been intrigued with this double ever since I made a crude 10-inch SCT photo that showed this wide (39.4") equal mag (8th mag) double plus the very close star next to the western star, which upon close examination of very good amateur images is seen to be double also. The western component of South 437 is shown as Bu536 CD on Cartes du Ciel at 16.5". I've never managed to see this companion, maybe because it has a 4mag difference (8.1-12.1m). Has anyone seen this one? The AB component supposedly is only 0.9" sep. and similar mags (8.1/9.4m). The Cartes du Ciel chart is confusing. Would appreciate PM on this if anyone can clarify (it is kind of abtruse for the forum, probably).

ES244A & B
Sky and Tel was kind enough to run a small quip on me in their magaezine for my bringing this to the attention of them. It was also referred to as the baseball diamond cluster .
Low power in medium aperture lends it an almost glittery planetary look, med to hifger mags reveal the diamond, a gleaming home plate, a runner who overshot first base, and batters waiting to get on deck.
Cool actually... in the belly of cygnus. Caught it while I was scanning at 70x with my 8" reflector.

I have different ones based on the season, but I have to say my all-time favorite is Albeiro. The only reason is in the summer, fall, and very early winter I always like to end an observing session on it, and usually at a low power to show-off its color contrast.

I "discovered" h3945 a month or two ago, and think it's interesting that this double doesn't have a reference in the common double catalogs. I don't see how a double this beautiful can fly under the radar...so to speak.

Gamma Andromedae through my 8" for its difficulty, and beauty in merged spurious discs of different color at a mere .5 arc sec seperation. 95 Herculi for color. 66 Cygni for those warm colors. Epsilon Lyra of course for obvious reasons. Es244 a@b - a fantastic multiple in a grouping smaller than the apparent face of Jupiter.
Wow - uts a tough list to put a lid on...

It really depends on what telescope I'm using. Here are a few examples:
Questar 3.5 - gamma andromedae - deep yellow, blue
Tak TSA 102 - alpha canes venaticorum - pure white, olive
10" newtonian - delta cygni - white, rose WZ cassiopeia - red, blue

My top 5, and their colors as I see them, would be these:
Gamma Andromedae (yellow/greenish)
Rasalgethi (orange/greenish)
Castor (silver/silver)
95 Herculis (grape green/lemon yellow)
Epsilon Bootis (yellow/indigo blue)
I can't say I DISLIKED any of the others!!

Izar, Epsilon Bootes, is my favorite. It is hard to split in my 10 inch SCT unless the seeing is steady.
I once spent and entire evening in July of 1999 exploring all of the double star systems in Bootes. I was learning to use my setting circles at the time and it was a lot of fun...but now I use a GOTo and TheSky software to point to stars...it is much easier to do.

Friday morning after the non lunar impact I went for Iota Cass and Beta Mon. This was an opportunity to compare both of these showpiece triples. Both are stunning but I really like the delicate structure of Iota. Make that my favorite triple!
