My guess is that the wood holding the dowel will split along the grain and release the dowel long before the dowel itself shears. Still, that's not going to happen under normal use.

Ok Greg and Jay. Just for grins... I just sat on the chair and asked my wife to sit on my lap, and do the macarena ... I can report back that as anticipated, the wooden dowels did not let out a peep, squeak or groan.... though as wild as the macarena can get, I can also say we didn't get anywhere near the multi-ton cross grain static bending modulus of rupture for oak and cherry reported above. Worse case scenario... e.g. an entire star party joins in my experiment, I'd probably have to cut a replacement dowel.

Dave,

I have no doubt the wood would hold, I just opted for the metal on my chair. The wood looks better as well. You have a beautiful and highly functional chair. I love mine at the eyepiece, especially sitting at the scope with it pointed at zenith or near it.

That is one BEAUTIFUL chair!!!!!!! You are right all that figure in the wood makes it even more BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!
