Double Star in Pleiades
      #3411066 - 10/25/09 11:37 PM

Has anyone noticed a really nice double star systems near the center of the Pleiades? From my area it looks reddish and green. Based on the Cambridge Double Star atlas I believe it's S 437.

Thanks,

Javier

Hi Javier, that's one of the first doubles I took note of. According to the Washington Double Star Catalog, S 437 refers to the AB-C combo that was separated by 34.6 arc seconds at PA 300 degrees in 1823 (The AB pair was separated by 0.4 arc seconds in 1878). I've also referred to it as BU 536 because this designation includes an 11.7 mag D star at 18.2 arc seconds and PA 11 degrees from the C star. Visually, this makes a great triple, with the D star hiding a bit next to the main 8th magnitude stars.

Hi Jeremy,

I didn't realize it was a triple. I'm going to have to get back out there again and have another look.
