Fourth one for the year, just announced in CBET 1994. Just a touch brighter than mag 10 at the moment.
Co-ordinates: RA 18h 31m 32.79s, Dec -16deg 19' 07.5" (J2000.0)
Here's a link to a pic generated in Starry Night, showing nova location:

Thanks Rob - and just visible from my UK skies if the cloud would clear at dusk - then I'll try my new setup for a sp*ctr*m to maybe see what nova type it is. It's just a few degrees east of Pluto on the Scutum/ Sagittarius borders

Hmmm, the list of stars in Sagittarius that haven't gone nova this year is shortening....

Hope conditions improve guys! I had a go at a spectrum tonight, more in hope than anger, but it's about 2 or 3 magnitudes too dim for my set-up.
Here's an image from tonight, with the nova showing quite clearly. Canon 400D, 200mm, 4 x 50 sec, ISO 1600, F/5.6, resized x2. 10:00, 27 October 2009 UT.

Cheers -

Nice image Rob - here's my 60s image through cloud-breaks tonight [through Rainbow grating] but too faint for conditions for a spectrum

as usual i try to spot them visually
only 15 degrees altitude, immediately after twilight, i could find it between the others (compared it with small printed star chart), and my estimate was 9.8
this was last night (27 Oct) around 17h45 UT

Well estimated - here's my shot at dusk tonight [Oct 28] below but cloud rolled in as a spectrum was attempted which didn't budge until the nova set

LOL!
Certainly makes you wonder. From memory the 4 Sgr novae this year have all been discovered by Japanese teams, so they must be scrutinising this area closely. Stands to reason, galactic centre, more stars fer yer buck & much better odds!
But still, how closely are other areas being scrutinised? Are a lot of "non-Sgr" novae slipping through unnoticed? It's pushing the odds that 67% of Milky Way novae this year occurred in one constellation (4 out of 6). Might be some discovery opportunities out there people!!!
Nice shots Nytecam, and by the way, now announced in IAUC 9089 (2009 Oct. 28): V5584 SAGITTARII = NOVA SAGITTARII 2009 No. 4

Hi All, I've just had a view of this nova at 1835UT this evening. I estimate it's magnitude at 9.2, seems to be holding steady so far.....

Agreed - from my pic tonight through partial cloud breaks but spectrum impossible again in these conditions

Seems to have brightened considerably, by 0.4 mag from when I imaged it on 27th to my shot last night on 1 Nov. AAVSO obs look a little like a dog's breakfast at the moment, visual estimates all over the place and only one V-band photometry obs posted so far.
Cheers -

Thanks Rich - finally got a lo-res spectrum this evening in late twilight showing strong and broadened H-alpha in emission. The width of this line [either side of 656nm of Ha at rest] indicates Doppler broadening due to explosive expansion. Used alpha PsA spectrum for comparison lines

I've done a video clip of my spectrum of Nova Sgr#4 8 days after discovery confirming the obvious eg that it is a nova - can't find any other spectra of this nova but I'm sure there is

Great work Nytecam, I'd give the vid an Oscar!!! Thanks Rob and for the link to excellent Japanese pro-spectra via some big scopes
Note in the first sequence of Japanese spectra the depth of the very strong [earth] atmospheric absorption lines A, a and B right of H-alpha in emission - proof of the very strong vertical stretching of the whole spectrum and the resultant 'noise' at the extreme range of the spectrum to right and left Very interesting
ps: I must re-sign up to vsnet-alert for hot news
