The 2012 Space Rocks Sixty: A Challenge Collection
      #5029549 - 01/20/12 10:04 PM

This is a challenge list of sixty meteorites selected by Russ Finney based on considerable input from the CN Space Rocks forum members. The "2012 Space Rocks Sixty" is a significant quest list for any level of meteorite collector to use as a learning, research, and collection building tool.

The list is derived in part from the past forum thread referenced below - but additional stones have been added based on Russ Finney's own collecting experiences (in other words he takes most of the blame for any frustration you might experience while attempting to meet the challenge):

http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3830932/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/all/vc/1

The list contains meteorites based on appearance, history, scientific value, and popularity. Some are easy to obtain (widely available and affordable) and some are very difficult to obtain (rare and expensive). But the total challenge list provides a good base to learn about the hobby and to understand the fundamentals of space material. Looking up each stone in the MET-BULL can provide a good insight into the characteristics and history of the various selected quest specimens - it can also provide clues as to specimen availability and sources:

Good luck to anyone who decides to pursue this quest - may it provide you with years of collecting satisfaction and a well deserved sense of accomplishment.

OK - now that I have put the challenge out there I should disclose that I have obtained fifty nine out of the list of sixty. One of the specimens still eludes me! A few of the others are mere specs which do count toward the quest - but really need to be a bit bigger to gain any respect from the more advanced members of the forum. My own quest continues...

Best Regards,

- RF

Looks like I'd better get busy; I only have 16 of the list.

I haven't purchased any for awhile, as other needs came first. So, I'll start working on the list!

I need ten of the total sixty:

Almahata Sitta
Cumberland Falls
Dhofar 007
D'Orbigny
Mifflin
NWA 2999
NWA 4925
Pena Blanca Spring
Portales Valley (I've been waiting for a better price)
Travis County

I now have something to shoot for this year. Great idea, Russ.

I just put in an order for the Almahata Sitta. Small, 0.088 grams.

Hi,

My understanding is that now is the best time ever to purchase D'Orbigny. Edwin Thompson has lowered the price and is in a selling mood.

Peter

Hi All,
I just ordered NWA 2999 - Achondrite Unique Angrite - 0.408 grams - 2004 - Morocco or Nigeria, Africa.

That leaves eight more to go. Some of the remaining specimens are very, very expensive.

Cumberland Falls
Dhofar 007
D'Orbigny
Mifflin
NWA 4925
Pena Blanca Spring
Portales Valley
Travis County

Peter, was that you who had that beautiful Portales Valley slice? If so, is there any chance of selling half?

Thank you. Wish me luck on my 2012 quest...

Peter,
Darn!!! I just can't get over how beautiful your specimen is. Don't ever let any part of her leave your collection.

Actually I have managed to obtain three specimens of Allan Hills over the years - the largest is half of a gram.

My missing specimen is Pasamonte - I once thought that I purchased a specimen but it turned out to be Pasamonte (b) which is not even listed in the MET-BULL.

The specimens that I have managed to find of Pasamonte have been way out of reach - that is one very expensive meteorite...

Best Regards,

- RF

Russ,
I also have a pasamonte(b). Tell me if you can make sense of what you are about to read. I bought my specimen from the Kansas Meteorite Society. Here is my provenance record info, below:

Pasamonte (b) Provenance

I found some new info today on the Pasamonte that I have. I bought this Pasamonte from M___ B____k, of Wichita, Marks COA has it as Pasamonte (b) L6 Chondrite; Union Co.,NM; found in 2001: TKW 185g. You may not want it. It's classification was done at ASU but has not been published in the Meteoritical Bulliten. If you don't want it no problem.

Here's what I found Pasamonte (b):

I noticed the other day that Pasamonte (b) has not been published in the
Meteoritical Bulliten. I have not researched the reason or even know if the
meteorite was ever submitted, however I thought I would put Gary Huss'
classification report of this meteorite on-line so it is referenceable.
Huss makes the best classification reports. This one is kind of neat, since
Nininger tracked down Pasamonte, and Gary Huss is Nininger's grandson.

Anyway, the report can be viewed here...

http://www.meteoritearticles.com/pasamontebreport.html (obsolete)

As a little side note. My grandfather was born in Conway Springs (Kansas).
Maybe 40 miles from here?....and the birthplace of Nininger. Maybe they
went to school together. My grandfather died in 1987, a few years before
Nininger and is close enough in age that I should look more into this, at
least compare their birth dates...

Clear Skies,
M__k Bo_____k
Wichita, Kansas

Also I found:
Pasamonte (b) was recovered from Union County, New Mexico during August of 2001. One stone chondrite meteorite, 185 grams, was found by Michael Cottingham (e-bay dealer report) who wrote the following on this find; "My wife W__n and I spent a lot of time this summer hunting The Pasamonte Strewnfield looking for more of the Pasamonte (Eucrite). This Eucrite is way too fragile to have survived on the ground since its fall....but I needed to get this search out of my mind once and for all. We hiked and searched the Pasamonte Strewnfield for several hundred hours and probably walked over 100 miles....searching...searching. While we didn't find any of the Eucrites....we did find this one little stone tucked away in an eroded area. Gary Huss at ASU did the work on this stone and it is an L6. I think it is very pretty and with a low known weight very desirable. The closest landmark was the Pasamonte Ranch..... hence the name Pasamonte (b). N 36 degree 14. 562 by W 103 degree 45.515..... this is w the stone was found." Arizona State University got ~24 grams for the classification work. Description by Mark Bostick.

Let me know what you think,
Best regards,
B___

Hi All,
I just ordered Dhofar 007 - Achondrite, Eucrite-cm - 5.42g - 1999 - Oman.

That leaves seven more to go.

Cumberland Falls
D'Orbigny
Mifflin
NWA 4925
Pena Blanca Spring
Portales Valley
Travis County

I'm assuming "ALH 7600", in the complete list, means Allan hills A76009 or ALH 76009 (only because I have it). There are also ...76001, ...76003 and ...76007.

I looked at the Pasamonte micros - wow those are tiny and expensive...

But I may have to do it to meet the challenge.

First I'll look for something in Tucson during the events next week.

Thanks for the heads up on the availability! I saw a few other hard to get items in micro sizes from the list on eBay as well.

Best Regards,

- RF
