My inspiration for the project, Julie Powell, who cooked all of Julia Child’s recipes in Mastering the Art of French Cooking, was a wreck at the end of her self-imposed one-year limit.
I'm sure William and Caroline would have appreciated your project. Julia Child reportedly didn't like Julie Powell's "stunt."

And they had to go and make a silly movie of that $*!#
Anyway, nice article Rod, I enjoyed it quite a bit. And good job; but please, no movies...

The way Hollywood is so faithful to the truth and original story you're likely to get Larry the Cable Guy to play you.

That's funny; that's more or less what I look like now. Same beard, hair, & hat, right down to the silver conchos. (No, I'm not a weirdo copycat. Just happen to have a hat like that, that I got for Cowboy Action shooting.)
In my salad days, I had hair halfway to my waist and a Les Paul hung down close to my knees!

I really enjoyed this story. I'm a huge fan of William and Caroline Herschel (The King's Astronomer is a good read) and tackling the complete Herscel catelog sounds like a great project. I've been using my cameras to observe for some time and they're a great way to go after really faint objects from my back yard. I'm also in the process of refurbing my homebuilt 16.5" specifically to take a first-hand look at some if these objects that I've been imaging. Thanks Rod!

kudos, rod. i've just finished a similar project, observing each of the 2600 double stars visible from my location that are listed in Haas's or Mullaney/Tirion's double star books. it takes many nights to sight that many targets. herschel was also an inspiration for me, specifically his double star catalogs.
it makes you realize what an extraordinary ambition and achievement herschel's observations were, especially as he had to build his own scopes and eyepieces and work with a huge manually operated telescope, no coordinates, and no star charts worth the name, just the time signals called out and recorded by caroline.
two things that surfaced for me were the large discrepancy between catalog descriptions and what you actually discover at the eyepiece (or video screen) -- although the situation with double stars and deep space objects may be different in that regard -- and the mind boggling depth, richness, variety, extent and grandeur of space. a kind of grateful loneliness.
rod's is a great example of setting yourself a personal goal and seeing it through. i think you understand, and experience, and learn things about the sky that way that you cannot by just hitting the showcase objects on the abbreviated observing lists.
that method is a little like signing up for the seven day bus tour of europe. there is so much more to see if you set out with a backpack and good bike, and plan your own itinerary, and take it one day at a time.
