Another Bright Possible Nova in Sagittarius July 7
      #5307184 - 07/07/12 06:33 PM

Well folks, this has just been announced through AAVSO, a magnitude 7-8 nova in sagittarius again, and seems relatively bright, it's located in the large sagittarius starcloud, relatively easy to find:

AAVSO Special Notice #289

Bright nossible nova in Sagittarius = PNV J18202726-2744263
July 7, 2012

AAVSO Special Notice #289
July 8, 2012

Bright nossible nova in Sagittarius = PNV J18202726-2744263

A new, bright (V and unfiltered magnitudes 7-8) object has been
independently discovered in Sagittarius by at least four
observers. The IAU CBAT TOCP page identifies the object as PNV
J18202726-2744263 and gives the earliest report (Koichi Nishiyama
and Fujio Kabashima) date and time 2012 July 07.4986 UT and their
magnitude 7.8 unfiltered CCD.

Coordinates: 18 20 27.26 -27 44 26.3 (2000.0)

This object has been submitted to VSX. When it has been accepted,
charts may be created using the AAVSO International Variable Star
Plotter (http://www.aavso.org/vsp) and the name PNV J18202726-2744263.

Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database
using the name PNV J18202726-2744263.

Using AAVSO chart, I visually estimated the magnitude at 8.1 (8.0, 8.4, 8.8) on 7/11/2012, 1:00 A.M. EDT with 90mm refractor at 36X.

Van Jan
How did you get that chart??? I've gone to the AAVSO site and was directed to the VSX page but came up with nothing.

Fred,

I just went to the AAVSO site, clicked on Special Notice #289 and used the link therein to get to the vsp program. Alternatively, the article on the Sky and Telescope website re: this nova has a clickable map that'll get you an AAVSO chart. Good luck on observing this nova!

VanJan

VanJan,
That's what I did. Then I entered NOVA SAGITTARII and was directed to VSX where I repeated the request and still got nothing. Then I started all over again using th identifying number given in the notice (PNV J18202726-2744263) and again the sme results - NOTHING. What am I doing wrong?
Fred

Thanks Guys,
What I was neglecting to do was enter in the chart scale. Once I did that success was mine . Thanks again

I viewed it last night, it looked to me like it was slightly dimmer than the 8.4 star on the AAVSO chart. I'd guess around 8.7 or 8.8.

anyone else?

Finally got a shot at this nova the other night, low to mid mag 9s by the look of it so dimming off.

Also an animation, showing the nova position on 10 June and the nova on 18 July (nova at centre).

Cheers -

Rob

I'm still waiting for my first observation of this nova. The weather here, this month, has been terrible.

After weeks of hazy weather I finally had a clear night (7/21) to observe N Sgr 2012 No. 4 with my 10" refl. I estimated its magnitude at 9.4.
