I have a celestron nexstar 5 the begins to move uncontrololably while slewing or setting up alignment. only way to stop it is to shut it off and try to start over, but it just keeps happening. any suggestions?
Thanks Andre

Andre,
Power, and if not that then it's probably the power.
Seriously it's most commonly a power problem. Either a power source that's not up to the task or a power connection that's got problems. The simplest connection fix is to carefully split the center pin in the power socket on the mount with a small blade knife so the plug fits more securely. Also try another power source, make certain if you're using a battery that it's fully charged and try another DC power cable.
The reason this often occurs when the scope starts to move is that is when the motors draw the most power or current/amperage. That extra draw of amperage often causes a power supply to drop it's voltage (or a bad connection with enough resistance to do the same), it's this drop in voltage that causes strange and incorrect things to happen.
Next there are other possible connector issues internal to the mount. Best way to handle this is to open the base and re seat all the connectors.
Finally it could be an encoder wheel that's come loose or the encoder is actually failing. These are part of the motor/gearcase assembly and not easily serviceable.
Which model NexStar 5 do you have ... an orange tube 5SE?
