Altitude slew limit and balance for N8SE?
      #5328558 - 07/21/12 04:56 PM

How do people set the altitude slew limit on the N8SE?* I think the factory default is 80d but at that setting mine still collides with the baseplate, even when using the stock diagonal.

Also, how important is balance of the OTA? I've moved mine as far forward as possible on the stock rail for maximum zenithal access, but when using the OTA on a manual alt-az I notice the balance point is quite a bit further forward (especially with dew shield mounted). Should I worry about imbalance affecting performance or longevity? My altitude clutch is pretty tight (not adjusted from stock) and I haven't detected any slipping.

*EDIT for clarification: I know how to set the altitude slew limit in the hand controller; what I should have asked was what values to people find appropriate.

Thanks,

Hi Matt:

If it collides with the base using the stock diagonal, then loosen the dovetail clamp, slide the scope forward, and re-tighten.

If there's no interference with the base, the slew limits can be set to 90° and all should be fine.

For the filter limits, its a good idea to set them to something less then 0-90. Targets near the horizon will be distorted, and likely blocked by trees, buildings etc. Targets near zenith will be difficult to track, and gotos will be problematic because the mount rotates around that point. I set mine to 20° min and 80° max.
