December 2005 "DSO" Imaging Challenge Winner - Hoser's Image of Messier #1 - The Crab Nebula!
Equipment Used:
- TeleVue NP-127 (660mm, F5.2)
- TAK NJP Mount (unguided)
- Meade DSI-Pro, TV 2x PowerMate
Exposures:
- L 23x85 seconds
- R 21x60 seconds
- G 24x60 Seconds
- B 33x60 seconds
Processing Software Used:
- CCDStack
- Registar
- Photoshop
Description of Processing Technique:
CCDStack:
- Used CCDStack (trial) to register and combine separate L, R, G, B frames
- used Poisson/sum data rejection and combination approaches
Registar:
- Channel alignment
Photoshop:
- Separate noise reduction in each channel
- RGB combine
- LRGB framing
- Curves, levels, and selective color layers
- Gentle sharpening via High Pass, Unsharp (Lodriguss), and NIK Sharpener Pro
- Gentle noise reduction in NeatImage
Additional Comments:
- very difficult night, had to shoot through high clouds
- dark - moon was nearing new phase
- very thin image - needs a lot more subs, with longer exposure times
- final processing was hard to judge, too contrasty on new computer, so I adjusted for old computer - so this may look over-highlighted to you.

May 2006 "DSO" Imaging Challenge winner - 2020BC's image of Messier #5
Subject: M5 Globular Cluster Camera: Canon 350D (unmodified) Prime Focus. Mirror lock enabled. Scope: Unguided Meade LXD-75 SN-8 f/4. Baader MPCC Coma Corrector. Exposure: 1 x 30secs, ISO 1600, Noise Reduction On. Field: 45 arcMins wide (approx.) Cropped to 1600x1200 then reduced to 800x600. Location: Canberra, Australia 29May06 (1200-1300hrs) UTC Processing: Histogram, crop, reduce and unsharp mask in Imageready.
The home-made wire-mesh diffraction focuser that I use for selecting focus was placed on the front of the scope for this shot. This yielded the strong diffraction spike on the brightest nearby star.
