No, really, these are available for download. Take a look...
The Mag-7 Star Atlas Project - Andrew Johnson
Taki's 8.5 Magnitude Star Atlas
Taki's 6.5 Magnitude Star Atlas
CNebulaX Project
These may not exactly replace the large published atlases, but these should keep you busy for a long time while you decide which atlas to buy - or whether to go with a printed atlas at all...
Allow me to express our collective gratitude to the people responsible for these resources. Your hard work and generosity are greatly appreciated!

My observing buddies and I each printed the Mag 7 atlas and put it in plastic page protectors so we could write on them. We use them for planning purposes all the time, they're excellent for that. And they have the constellation outlines, which I find handy.
I second your gratitude! - Rick

Mr. Johnson's atlas, additionally, has, for the novice, the advantage of having the constellation stick figures drawn in. This makes atlas page identification possible at a glance--a very nice touch. Don

Another nice touch: using the page protectors and putting the charts back-to-back, you can rearrange them so that the majority of them are two-page charts. This makes it that much more useful. - Rick

Please note that a link to José R. Torres' "CNebulaX" project (as seen in the Deep Sky Observing forum) has been added to the list of free atlases.

I started a Yahoo! group for this software after exchanging a couple of emails with Senor Torres:

If anyone is interested please sign up - there's not been a lot of activity on it ...! :^)
