I sure can not answer that question BUT I will tell you I use a Jasper Always as a pointer on my own telescopes...

Did I seriously overpay ???? Maybe... but it works great and even works well in below freezing conditions...SO I'm happy...

I use the Jasper Alway model as well. Very well designed for astronomy. The Lithium batteries it ships with hold up better in the cold than Alkaline. It also has a circuit that monitors the beam output and compensates for changes in temperature, battery voltage, etc. to attempt to maintain an output as close to 5mw as possible. And it has a push-on-push-off button instead of momentary like most GLPs. You don't have to hold onto it while you're using it.

It's worked for me in temps down to 20F. I haven't used others, but I've heard reports from other folks regarding many GLPs that die when they get below 50. The Jasper does cost more, but seems to be worth it to me.

Jasper Always for me as well. I just got it and have used it every night out. I mounted it to my scope and it's a great "quick pointing" device.

I have a Jasper APC - reasonably priced, works great. I purchased mine based on getting recommendations from folks here.

I use the Lumicon and their custom bracket. Works great for me, but then again, I'm not in the "Actic Circle" like some of you guys! I've heard lasers can be quite touchy in cold weather.

Jasper Always - I've used one regularly for a couple of years now as a "finder" on my grab and go scope. It has not let me down yet. I also own and use a Jasper "Now" and a Jasper "Curve". I use the Now in lecture halls and for pointing out objects in sky. The Curve I got on special for pretty cheap - I find it the least useful of the 3 for astro but still very nice.

Another vote for Jasper Always. Not only does it work great in all temperatures but when I let them know that my push-button switch was sticking occasionally, I had a new switch, no charge, in 3 days. Great customer service!

I never heard of the Jasper Always but based on recommendations here just ordered one...thank you all for your comments! It can be daunting picking out what works.

Chad, I can't speak to it's cold-weather capabilities yet, as I haven't owned it long enough to use it in colder temps yet. I don't use mine on a scope, but I believe there are mounts out there that can be used with GLP's - see here:

Also good: Howie Glatter tuned lasers from Great Red Spot astronomy.

As for holders:

The great thing about this one is that the holder actually keeps the laser rather warm - the case can't radiate to the night sky and cool dramatically because of it.

Jasper APC. Hard to beat the sale price. I have a review of it somewhere in this forum.

Here it is: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4111316/page/2/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1

Hotech Astro Aimer 3 is my favorite, although more expensive. GLP, red and white flashlight in one device.

I found them at $7.99 each on one of those on-line deal a day sites, so I bought 4 of them. I started one of them, thinking that if it wouldn't last too long and I would have a few backups. That was more than a year ago and the one that I started still works fine.

I have a Jasper APC too, because you can often get it for this price. But I use it for manually pointing out objects in the sky. Since I keep it in my pocket, I don't know how it would work in cold temps.

I use the Jasper Always because it was designed to be a GLP Finder. It has the on/off switch on the rear (like a ball-point pen clicker) which keeps it accessible when you mount it.

And you can buy a swivel-ball mount from Jasper which is designed to work with the Always. It's overpriced, but makes alignment extremely easy. While viewing through a low power EP in your scope (or RACI finder if you have one), just waive the GLP around until you see the tip of the beam ending in the middle of the view. Done.

Same here, I also vote for the Astro Aimer 3, I have one, the most useful laser made, as has been said, not just a laser, but astronomy torch as well, 3 uses in one, and works great in the cold with Lithuim batteries.

I got mine from Scope Stuff. I'm not sure what brand it is (generic?) but after 3+ years I'm only on the second set of batteries, and it works well in the cold. It cost $60.
