Meade DS-90 with missing teeth on drawtube Fix? new
      #4450423 - 03/14/11 10:54 PM

Hi,
I received a Meade DS-90 ATA that unfortunately got damaged in the mail. The draw-tube lost a lot of teeth and visual back was cracked slightly but useable. Anyone know where I might find a 2" drawtube replacement (metal would be nicer than plastic)? BTW: The scope was less than 1 year old (from new purchase date) when I received it from the original owner and Meade didn't carry any spare parts. Seems like a decent scope otherwise but don't want to sink much money into it if Meade doesn't support it.

Try contacting Bill Vorce at scopehed@frontiernet.net. He buys excess Meade stock, overruns, discontinued items and other junk directly from Meade and sells it on Ebay through his store Telescope Warehouse. He has lots of Meade parts.

Dave

Don Pensack (Starman1) recently posted a fix for stripped plastic focusers:

"We see plastic R&P focusers, with the plastic rack stripped out, all the time. We repair them by filing the rack down until it's smooth, then covering the pinion with a rubber o-ring. It actually improves the action of the focuser immensely."

Fixing plastic focusers

I have never tried it but I trust Don implicitly. If he says it works, I am confident it works.

Jon

Bill Vorce is probably your best bet and the fix of stripped focusers is a great piece as well. The DS90 is a nice scope when working well and occasionally they do come up on ebay. I have had three of the DS series refractors and they were fine performers. Hope this works out for you.

I'm considering buying a focuser but spending $100 for something to fix another thing I paid $75 for just bothers me a bit. Think I'll just need to get over that. Appreciate the advice!

What kind of focuser do you have in mind? If I may suggest one, Dan Crawford at www.crawmach.com makes very nice 1.25" and 2" focusers and if an adapter needs to be made, he can do it.

About all I know is it came with a standard 86mm 2" focuser.
The focuser itself looks reasonably sturdy so if I could just find a drawtube that would fit, I'd be back in business but I can't find anyplace that just sells that part by itself.

I put a metal r&p on mine from Meridian cost about $50.
