It’s nearly time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge, which presents greater difficulty after the summer solstice. A few North Americans may sight the two-day-old Moon on July 20. More should be able to see Diana’s Bow on July 21.
My detailed article previewing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my preview graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon
Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone.
Here is a link to a photo that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Moon aged 48:03 hrs seen above fireworks on 2008 JUL 04 at 21:22 CDT: www.CurtRenz.com/NM080704.jpg

One of the first things I noticed upon returning from my long hiatus from astronomy was that faithful 'ol Curt was still running the monthly New Moon Challenge! Curt, how long has it been?

My New Moon challenge as been offered on this forum since 2004, Tim. I hope you have an entry this month.
Soon I'll present a different sort of challenge regarding the August 13-14 occultation of Venus, which will be a daytime event for North America. I've already created graze maps for my website, and soon will provide more graphics and data: www.CurtRenz.com/moon

Ralph, that's a beautiful scene of Diana's Bow peeking through a veil of clouds. Thanks for sharing. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised by an unusual type of farming in a state "where the wind comes sweeping down the plain."

Rats! I raced home to report I'd just seen it tonight. I never win. Beautiful shot, Ralph!

Thanks guys, tried to get out the day before just in case but the clouds were even worse so if it was there I couldn't see it.

Is it my imagination or do I see earth shine through those clouds?
