Ring Nebula in Binos? new
      #2328266 - 04/15/08 08:39 AM

Is this possible? I was out looking at Lyra last night with my 20x80's and thought I saw a fuzzy patch, but I thought it would take something much bigger to see that. Keep in mind also, that while it was cold (for Florida), the conditions would never be considered ideal. About mag 4.0-4.5 at best.

I've detected the Ring in 22x85 and 25x100 binoculars under similar skies. It's not much to see, just a faint patch that is a little lighter than the background sky. Excellent transparency is key to seeing it under such conditions.

I've seen it in anything 7x and up, though at lower magnifications it's almost (though not quite) stellar. At 10x it's a nice fuzzy dot.

I've never noticed it in small binoculars, and only seen it as a fuzzball in the 80mm Short Tube. Big binoculars should show it nicely though.

At 10x, I've just made it out as fuzzier than a star. At 16x it's easy. Many of the well-known planetaries respond to the same treatment.

M57 is a "soft" star in my 14X70 Fujis. Never tried it at 10X but will have to try soon.

Haven't tried seriously for M57 with my Skymasters....yet.
Havta to try for it!

I saw it mostly with averted vision. A fuzzy dot pretty much describes it. Pretty cool...

I live in Florida at nearly the same latitude as Lakeland and also and observed the Ring Nebula clearly early Saturday morning with my BT80's at 26x. I have no doubt that you saw it too. During new moon you may not need averted vision.

I always wanted to see it with my 9x63's but never was sure. Familiarity of the sky that comes with practice and improved skill help develop confidence in seeing, so I'll take my smaller binos out and keep trying.

With the BT100s and 14mm Denkmeier eps (42x), I can clearly see the Ring as annular with averted vision as well as the nearby 12th magnitude star.

With the 15x70s it appears as a distinct tiny uniform disc.

I've seen it with 10x50's from a dark site, on a mount, and with a good chart. It's definitely not much more than a slightly fuzzy faint star, but it is there!

Here in Winter Springs we have not the darkest skies... The ring nebula is easily visible in my Apogee RA-88s, and even at low power (20x).

I was initially astounded at how easy it was to see. Nicely defined smoke ring. Can't miss it.

Cool, you're only about 70 miles from me. We should get together sometime...

Only a true astronomer would get excited about a tiny fuzzy dot. I was thrilled to see it with 16 x 70 fujinons.
