Asteroid YU55 will pass just south of Altair (Alpha Aquilae) about 10:30pm EST on 08 Nov. I have not located anything more precise than this except low res charts and columns of coordinates, which are useless to me. Is there a detailed finder chart for the Altair region that shows how close the object will pass to Altair and Beta Aquilae, and the times?

Try downloading Stellarium and punching in the coordinates for the given night. You should be able to plot exactly where it is relative to the stars.

Parallax is a significant factor for such a close object. Therefore I will need to know your precise location: longitude, latitude, altitude and time zone. It you provide that, I will answer your question regarding Altair. For observers at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium, I calculate that the asteroid will appear to pass nearest Altair at an angular distance of 1.846°, position angle 161.595° and zenith angle 156.933° on November 8 at 16:44:22 CST. That will be only seven minutes after sunset for that location. Position angle is measured counterclockwise from celestial north. Zenith angle is measured counterclockwise from the zenith.

In XP the path is: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Stellarium\data\ssystem.ini
Paste mrfritz44's data in at the end of this file.

Filename to put the data in would help in Win7 as the only one I have is user_locations.txt and when I tried to add it to that it froze stellirium. Thanks, Rick

Not sure about a detailed finder chart, but for myself in NJ, it will be just over 1.6 degrees south of Altair at 5:40pm. I judge this to be about the time I should be able to pick up an eleventh magnitude object without too severe a difficulty.
Good hunting!

Dick, for your location I calculate that the asteroid will appear to pass nearest Altair at an angular distance of 1.655°, position angle 161.574° and zenith angle 145.323° on November 8 at 17:44:29 EST. Position angle is measured counterclockwise from celestial north. Zenith angle is measured counterclockwise from the zenith.

MrFritz44 - Much appreciated for the Stellarium text. Works like a charm to bring up 2005YU55. Don't forget folks you may have to change the file view settings when looking for the "AppData" location to install the text.(Using Windows7) Steve M. Lake Havasu AZ

Where did you get your elements? They differ from those in the JPL Small-Body Database Browser and the IAU Minor Planet Center.

I Googled them and cannot tell you honestly where I pulled them from. I did a comparison to some charts and the track took it just east of Altair at 17:45 EST tonight which seemed right so I ran with the edit.
This seems to be recent however:

Be careful. Some planetarium programs apparently don't handle such close asteroids well, and Steallarium is apparently one of them.
