Confused on how to connect 2" diagonal to my 8SE? new
      #5439762 - 09/25/12 12:57 PM

So I've just brought this new 2" diagonal, haven't got it yet.

2" diagonal

Does this screw directly onto the back of my 8SE, I can't really tell from the image? Are all 2" diagonals standard?

On the website they also sell a '2" SCT adapaptor"

SCT adaptor

Not sure if I also needed this as well?

Anyone help on this?

The 2" diagonal is like your 1.25" diagonal except the tubes are 2" instead of 1.25" so you will need a different visual back. The visual back is the thing that screws onto your telescope and has a hole which accepts the tube from your diagonal (or eyepiece directly). You insert your diagonal tube (or eyepiece tube) into the hole and tighten it down with a screw.

I have the Baader click lock one you can see here. There are less expensive ones that other people will probably point you to.

Hi Chris,

You would probably have been better off buying a SCT diagonal instead of the push fit type.

http://www.scopesnskies.com/prod/antares/mirror/diagonal/sct.html

With the SCT type you remove the visual back and screw the diagonal directly onto the back of the scope in its place. This has the advantage of being more stable and, by not extending as far out as the push fit, clearance of the base for high Alt viewing.

Regards. Peter.

Thanks guys. I also want the diagonal to fit on a refractor I've just brought as well, so I don't the Celestron custom version would work as it wouldn't fit the refractor.

Base on the diagonal you got, you definitely need to get the "SCT adaptor", which is essentially a 2" visual back to accept 2" accessories.

Call the store where you bought your 2" diagonal and talk with them. I am not sure of the one you have but some of the 2" diagonals have threaded bodies so you either screw in the SCT adapter OR the straight nosepiece for refractor use.

No you can't use this with 8se without adaptors or unless you buy the SCT specific 2"-1.25" diagonal. I have the Celestron 2" which screws on. If you are going to use 2" EP's frequently then get an adaptor which may increase the focal lenght.

Almost all Refractors come with a 2"-1.25" diagonals. Not sure which one you got. In case yours by any chance came with a 1.25" diagonal, maybe that could be used with your 8se?

Or get a good 1.25" diagonal.
