Backlog.. M5 from 24 May 08
      #2552951 - 07/31/08 05:01 PM Attachment (30 downloads)

Processing some images in my backlog of images to process...

This is M5.. I was running out of time before this slipped behind a tree. I had a clear night on the 24th of May (I remember it as a particularly transparent one, 4/5) so I figured I'd image some globs with the 8" SCT. In a hurry, I took a few subs at ISO3200 (gulp!). Really noisy result, most of my processing time was spent removing the noise

M5, Taken 24 May 2008
Stack of 6 x 30 sec subs, ISO3200
Canon 40D through Meade 8"/200mm SCT w/0.63x reducer, f/6.3, 1260mm focal length
Autoguided with Philips Toucam Pro 840k webcam and Guidedog software
Focus and camera control with EOS Utility
Calibrated and stretched in Iris
Final Processing in Photoshop CS2 with Noel's astronomy tools, GradientXTerminator, Noise Ninja and FredMiranda.com's Intellisharpen II

And a 100% crop of center.. a little rough, but not bad for 3 minutes total integration time

Andrew, I ran my usual Carboni series of noise reduction over it: Horizontal and Vertical Banding Noise reduction, Color Blotch Reduction, Space Noise Reduction.

Then I reset the blackpoint.

Haha Eric, I already ran the space noise reduction routine these pics are pretty noisy. The lesson for today's class is to not image at ISO3200! I'll give it a go with the horiz/vert banding removal routine. Thanks for the tip.

I always run the Horizontal/Vertical Banding Reductions first. Then the Color Blotch reduction. Finally, Space Noise Reduction.

Usually I do a Curve or two before any noise reduction.

But as you said, with a bright cluster I'd shoot at a much lower ISO.

Really nice one Andrew!

Eric, I do the horizontal banding first as well.. then I run space and/or deep space. Never had good luck with colour blotch reduction though.

Nice shot, with good star colors. It looks like the big 8-inch scope does a good job on GCs.

Thanks everyone, I redid it following Eric's suggestion-- horizontal and vertical banding removal, color blotch reduction. I didn't like what the space noise reduction did at 100% zoom so I eschewed that step.
