Asahi Pentax historical data needed!!!
      #2788133 - 12/05/08 01:48 PM

The 2.4-inch (60mm with a focal length of 800mm) Asahi Pentax alt-azimuth refractor is a popular classic telescope. I would like to know the following facts about that particular vintage refractor:

(1) During what years was it sold? Try to be specific!
(2) What type of outlets offered the scope? Camera stores, direct mail order, etc.?
(3) What was its original selling price?
(4) Does anyone have an advertisement for the Pentax scope that they can post as an image for the group to see?
(5) Was the Pentax refractor rebranded by other telescope companies, in other words, were their labels placed on the focuser? If so, then please list those companies. (Such as Lafayette Radio, etc.).
(6) Any other historical information that members can provide? What does Asahi mean?

Please post your answers and/or images to this Classic Telescopes Forum.

It's not "Ashai", but "Asahi".

"Asahi" means "Morning Sun" in Japanese. At least according to an online dictionary I found.

Pentax is a name with no meaning, as far as I can make out.

It is spelled "Pe n ta shi" in Japanese. I tried to include the Japanese kana used to spell it, but all I could see after I posted it was a lot of strange symbols.

Clear skies!

I can answer number (5):
One rebrand is Jupiter it is an almost exact clone of the Asahi Pentax, from the wood box to the exact Alt/Az mount. The reason i say almost is that the Jupiter has the same smooth EXTREMELY well built focuser but the Jupiter's is mounted with screws as the slightly nicer Asahi is a threaded screw on focuser.

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.

Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

As far as question (2) is concerned, i found this sticker atop the focuser, MISCO Clinton Corp i am guessing it is a distributor of Scientific Instruments from Ann Arbor Mich ???

My Asahi Pentax scope is supplied with several 0.965-inch diameter oculars. They are labeled either "H" for Huygenian, "AH" for Achromatic Huygenian, and a mysterious "B." What does the "B" stand for? In other words, what type of eyepiece design does this refer to? It is marked on the 6mm ocular as B6.

Are these true Pentax manufactured oculars, or did Pentax purchase them from another Japanese company for use in their telescopes? What is the next generation of Pentax brand eyepieces after these older oculars?

I have never seen B before but i looked it up and maybe it is:

Bertele ???

Here is a neat site explaining eyepiece types. There is even some diagrams with the lens placements, if you feel adventurous maybe you can take your B 6mm apart and compare it to the diagrams.

Asahi was company name. In the past (~2002), the corporate name was ASAHI OPTICAL CO., LTD.
Pentax or Asahi Pentax was a brand name.
BTW, Asahi means morning sun or rising sun, surely.
