Light shields anyone? new
      #3064385 - 04/24/09 01:13 PM

Anyone use a light shield on their newt/dob?

Would this function on a scope like mine?: Orion XT-10.

You can send Joe at Astrozap a message and see what he thinks.

If you have street lights shining directly into your focuser or behind the secondary, this will help. Otherwise, skip it. - j

I always used one on my old dob because there was a street light nearby. But you can make your own a lot cheaper than the one in that add. Just go to lowes and get the sticky-back velcro strips, then go to a craft store like Hobby Lobby and get a piece of the black foam they sell for art projects.

Tom while you are at it make it a dew shield that way you have both covered.

I made mine from the cardboard backing of a couple of legal-sized notepads, plus duct tape, paint, and velcro. Pretty cheap, works, and looks fine.

They will also delay dew forming on the secondary. I prefer the type that go around the entire opening. The dew shields mostly used on Cassegrains work well.

I had one made up for the 18 consisting of a bent round piece of formica which fits nicely within the inside diameter of the UTA resting on the spider vanes. It adds a little weight so had to add some extra counter balance. Makes an ideal light shield and delays the requirement to turn on the secondary due heater.

I used an Astrozap for a 12in Meade SCT. TBH when I originally bought it I didn't actually need it because I mainly viewed from a dark back yard. In the new house I have no choice but to view out front if I want to view anything below 50º in the south and I have orange streetlights within 10ft of my front yard.

Woah, do I need it now. It paid its dues big time. I was able to view Saturn against a pitchblack sky with the planet only a few degrees away from being behind the streetlight bulb. Only then did the light cone from the streetlight stretch down the 16in flocked lightshield to the focuser drawtube. Ditto with the full tube flocking, did it before I really needed it but in the new house it is an absolute necessity and a revelation in terms of the great job it does.

Had my new 16" Lightbridge out in that front yard before I lightshielded, flocked and shrouded it and I was viewing Saturn against a bright orange background!!

Heres a pic. I actually trimmed the circumferance of the SCT dew/lightshield so it would fit inside the OTA tube resting on the spider vane bolts on the inside. When I had it on the outside it always sagged into the lightpath.

Hey! that looks great Keith, wonder which one I should get? Does the dew heater work for the entire tube/scope?

Tom,

I bought the version without a built in heater. The heater serves no purpose on a Newt/Dob. On an SCT it gently heats the glass corrector plate to remove/keep dew off. No corrector plate on standard Newt although you could use a heated dew shield on a Schmidt Newtonian which is kinda like a cross between a newt and an SCT. a Schmidt newt does have a corrector plate that dews up.

For us though it would serve only to introduce heat plumes into the lightpath.

Like others said, you can make your own but I had just spend ages DIYing other mods for the scope and was DIY burnt out and decided to splash the cash on the astrozap instead.

Because of a neighbor 2 doors down that sometimes leaves his porch light on so their dog can see where it's "going", and it's on the line of a 100 watt bulb, I'm going to build a light shield of a 4x8 sheet of plywood and 2x4's to lean up against the block wall in my yard to block the light. The light shields proposed here would not work for me unfortunatly!

Jeff

Hello Jeff. Look in the phone book for a plastic dealer, give them a call and explain what you need. As far as light panels---One inch of pvc and a few fittings and a 8 x 10 tarp and a few gunneges I"ve made 3 8 x 10 panels i can get all of the pvc but a few into the bag your lawn chair came in. I have glued what fittings I could. In less than 10 minutes the wife and have them up.

Oh yea It's called Kydex. comes in differnt size's. I've cut mine to cover 1/2 of the tubes diametert. I have used three large velcrow on the inside of the kydex and tube. I but to my spider. So far its the same one i made last year. As for the bottom I have a fan so I used cardboard painted black. Made it last year. I Have to much time on my hands so I make darn here every thing. Hope this gives you some ideas

Thanks Jerry! I didn't think of that. The tarp and pvc would be A LOT lighter than plywood and 2x4's!

Now that's what I need, about 1/3rd the length would be perfect to block out the ony 2 lights, in front of me.

These should do the trick for a dew/light shield for a dob!
