6mm Delos Vs. 6mm Ethos
      #4780226 - 08/31/11 02:11 PM

I recently ordered a 6mm Delos, not yet arrived. Has anyone here viewed through both a 6mm Delos and a 6mm Ethos, specifically on either Jupiter or Saturn? If so, a description of the sharpness and clarity of the views, and a description of how both eye pieces resolved detail on the planets' surfaces would be appreciated. I am reconsidering my decision to buy 8, 6 and 4mm Delos eye pieces (when the 8 and 6 become available) and instead, buy this eye piece range in Ethoi. I like the 20mm offered by the Delos because I like to view with glasses. However, the Ethos and its 100 AFOV would provide a wider view, making objects easier to find when using high power. The Ethos does have 15mm of eye relief. Therefore, my decision is to weigh the trade offs between having more eye relief and less AFOV, or vice versa.
If either the Delos or Ethos provided views that were superior (besides AFOV) in ability to resolve planetary detail, then that would tip my decision. Why don't I do the test myself at a star party? Because, no one in my club has these two eyepieces.
Thanks so much to those who will provide some feed back on this question.

I would be interested in the same topis if any DELOS and ETHOS user is around?

Hi Gene,

You probably saw my post on the 6mm Delos and Ethos on extended objects here. But can not comment on planets.

Thanks Alvin,
Someone told me that the Delos gives a slightly more contrasty, detailed image on planets than the Ethos. This seems consistent with your comparison. That is the tipping point for me. I like the Delos' 20mm of eye relief. Its 72 degrees AFOV is better than the Radian. I believe for high power work, I will sell my Radians for the Delos. In October, I will do a shoot out on Jupiter between my 6mm Delos, 6mm Radian, and 12mm Nagler with 2X Powermate.
Gene

I would agree with that. But it's a VERY subtle difference. A couple of weeks ago, I met up with a couple of friends who live up the hill from me and we observed Jupiter through their 24" f/4 Newtonian with a 10mm Ethos, a 9mm Nagler T6, and a 10mm Delos ( I currently have the 10mm and 6mm Delos on loan from Televue for a review I'm doing in ATT). The 6mm Delos was too much power in the 24" but we did compare it with a 6mm Ethos and a 6mm Expanse clone (just for giggles) in my 16" f/4.5. Both scopes had paracorrs and after going back and forth, we all agreed that the two Delos were ever so slightly better on Jupiter than the Ethos and Nagler in both scopes. The Delos were a LOT better than the Expanse clone. We didn't observe any DSO's with them.

I really like the adjustable barrel on the Delos, which enables the eye relief to be exactly where you want it. Much better than the click-stop mechanism on the Radians.
