Ron,

Not exactly the same CMOS imager, but close:

This is a 6 mp cam. Is it not as good as the 9000?

Ron,

SPC1300NC is a 1.3 Mpxl CMOS imager probably similar to Quickcam Fusion.
http://ghonis2.ho8.com/fusiontest4.html

6Mpxl mode is the interpolated resolution and should be ignored.
Per spec, it has the "Min. illuminance < 5 lux "
which is not really good.

I believe the chip in the 1300NC is smaller than the one in the 900NC model which means it will pick up less light.
I'm sure it would work fine but I'd recommend the 900 over the 1300.

I use the SPC900NC/27 web cam and, like others, find it an excellent tool for planet imaging.

The Philip web site has full specs on both, and a quick comparo shows the 1300 has higher pixel density and faster USB 2.0 connetivity, etc. The 900 has lower light requirements (<1 vs <5), and Philips makes a point of this feature. I do not know the advantages of the CMO based chip on the 1300 vs the CCD based chip on the 900.

I'd be leaving the 1300 in it's box on the shelf at Walmart if I were you.

You can't go past the 900nc for webcam imagers.

Brought the 1300 cam back and got the 900nc cam. Is this a better deal. How do you connect to the Tele?

Agena Astro webcam adapters

Make sure you select the type 3 version for the SPC900.

I just got this setup(SPC900+type 3 adpter from Agena).haven't tested it yet as i realised that since i'll be stripping off lens element of the webcam ,I will need IR filter(how stupid of me).So now ordered UV/IR filter from Agena Astro. Its on its way.

I just took posession of a 900NC and adapter earlier this week and only got out for a short test session on Monday.

My question: how important is a UV/IR filter? Why should I need one on this cam and what should I expect if I don't use one?

I also have a 900NC on the way and am wondering about the importance of an IR filter. If necessary, which one to order from Agena?

Without IR filtering you may not reach sharp focus. UV/IR blocking also greatly improves contrast, reduces color abnormalities and reduces halos.

The Baader is fairly cheap & works ok, but there are others.

I got 1.25 inch Badder UV/IR filter.
I read somewhere (i guess on CNs forum )that IR reaches webcam chip out of focus.correct me if I am wrong.

Ron,

Yes I have the adapter, it fits very snugly. I've used an older webcam with a Delrin machined adapter (the AgenaAstro ones are aluminum) and after a while it started to wear and need to be replaced.

I also use a UV/IR 1.25" filter, mine is the Celestron model (which I believe is made by Baader). Without the filter I notice a bit of softness on the edges of a planet and I think I get a bit more contrast on Jupiter and Saturn's belts.

I did a search after posting and ran across the focus issue on Robert Reeve's website....but he also said this:

"This is not as much of a problem with reflector telescopes, but it is a good idea to use the filter anyway to get a crisper focus."

Not sure why it may not be as much a problem on reflectors (which I have), nor am I sure just how much of a problem it would be to begin with. I know I do have some problems focusing on my f/5 scope, it probably would help...but I will wait a bit until I get this astrophotgraphy thing down a bit better

Reflecting scopes bring more than just the visible spectrum of light to a single focus point, they also focus infrared and UV at the same point. Refractors don't focus these wavelengths at the same point (and some don't even get all the visual wavelengths together which is one of the reasons for big buck APOs).

So when you use a refractor with an imager like a webcam that is also sensitive to the infrared and UV ends of the spectrum unless those wavelengths are blocked (with the filter) you'll get some out of focus stuff in your shots even though the subject looks perfectly focused.
