Rony's Binocular Sketches--Check this out
      #2352868 - 04/26/08 09:42 AM

Earlier this month, Rodelaet started posting threads about a new sketching project he recently began: Binocular Icons. When I ran across his threads in the Cloudy Nights Sketching Forum (and his personal website), I was hooked.

Rony is a very talented astro sketcher with an impressive portfolio of lunar, solar, and deep space sketches observed through his telescope. Now, to the delight of binocular observers everywhere, he has sharpened his magical pencil for a series of astronomy sketches observed through the unique binocular setup in his backyard.

Here are some links. Rony's binocular sketches are found at the beginning (first post) of each thread.

I hope you join me in sending Rony a personal message of appreciation and encouragement. His sketches are terrific.

You beat me to that, Bob. Just awesome sketches aren't they? I particularly love the one of M44. I was going to post a link to his sketches in the observing reports thread somewhere in this forum. Perhaps we can still do that.

Rony,

Let me echo the others' comments. Your sketches are quite amazing indeed. If I understand correctly, you make a pencil sketch outside, and then come inside to create the final version using Corel Photo Paint? Do you scan in your originals and then rework them in Photo Paint, or do you redraw them from scratch?

Again, congratulations on creating some marvelous images!

I agree they are great sketches.

Do you supplement them with additional information from photographs after the observation. I noticed a number of stars plotted on the M44 sketch that from my experience would require a much larger binocular and darker skies to be able to see.

Phil and Ed,

Thank you both for the kind words on these observations.

The sketches are created as follows.

I start with a pencil on paper sketch. The form that I use has a circle to represent the field of view. This circle measures about 19cm, the largest I can put on a letter format paper. I always start with an empty circle, no stars preprinted. The stars are drawn as seen. First the bright anchor stars. Then come the fainter ones. I label each star with a number (15 is like Vega, 2 is the faintest averted star, 1 is not used, as it could be seen as a glitch). Sometimes, the pencil is replaced by a ultra fine pigment liner. The liner is easier to read in the dark. This eyepiece sketch is created in 30 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the starfield. It takes more time and a lot of averted vision to detect the fainter stars. Here is were the mirror mount comes to value. I can sit relaxed and take deep breaths to support my vision, without having to support the bino's.
On an average night, I make 2 to 5 of these pencil sketches.

The digital rendering happens indoors. Again I start from scratch and build up the sketch in the same order as I did with the pencil sketch. The labels next to the stars help me to draw the dots according to the observed brightness. Star positions are compared with Sky Charts and corrected if needed. I use multiple layers to render the sketch. Stars, nebulae, halo's, glare, they all have a separate layer. The digital sketch is finished in about 90 minutes.

Ed, to answer your question on My M44 observation:

It is my experience that the 8x56 on the sky window offers me a gain of 4 to 4.5 mags over the estimated NELM. These estimates are rough. I am not good at estimating NELM. So the value might be off with 0.5 mag. If my readings are correct, the faintest star in the sketch is about mag 9.9 or mag 10 (according to Sky Charts). Thus the Nelm would be about 5.5 instead of 5?
Photographs are nice to compare with, but they do not represent the visual impression in the eyepiece. The faintest binocular stars I have ever noticed have mag 10.5. Again, these are values that I found in Sky Charts, not from a callibrated star chart.

Thank you, Ed, for bringing it under my attention.
In the future, I should put the values like : Nelm = 5.2 to 5.5.

Clear skies,

Thank you once more , Rony , for your superlative sketches .

It's good to be able to put some " lifelike " images to these oft mentioned , but seldom seen ( by me ) names !

If you haven't already done so ( in which case I apologise profusely for my unawareness ) I hope you can add a sketch of the North American nebula to your outstanding portfolio in the near future , as I've NEVER seen it with my own eyes , in spite of spending more time trying to than I have trying to find everything else in the sky , put together !

Kenny,

I do appreciate your kind words very much.

About the NA nebula : I was able to glimpse it during my last observation sessions. However, these midsummer nights are not the best nights to hunt for faint fuzzies. I decided to wait for the darker nights, as I hope that the NA nebula will reveil more details. Have a little more patience, as a sketch of the NA is planned in the near future.

Clear skies to you,

Very impressive sketches, gentlemen! Your talents are indeed an asset to all of us at CN! I can only wish to someday approach your talent!

I am blessed to have fairly dark skies here in VA, and summertime is when I set aside my scopes to view the Milky Way with my giant Miyauchis.

I am happy to report I can see absolutely stunning views of both the NA and Veil nebs.

Rony--

Once again, your sketches are fantastic. Thank you for continuing this project, which looks like it will make a major contribution to the world of binocular observing and sketching.

. . .

Now, do you think you can settle a big discussion we seem to have [with great frequency] in this forum--which is better for night sky observing: 8x40 or 10x50?

Perhaps you can approach a future object by giving us two sketches of the same object with different magnification and apertures.

For example, how does the 8x40 present one of the Messier's and then how a 10x50 presents the same object?

. . .

Another interesting project for your magical pencil/computer is to illustrate how various optics of different models affect the aesthetics that go to make up the art side of a better view--say color, brightness, darkness, environment, stray light, and on and on and on.

I am sure the binocular regulars can give you some additional effects they would like to see illustrated by your talent.

. . .

How about it, guys? Can Rony's art contribute something unique to your next binocular book? Something that many potential readers would like to see illustrated--but have not seen illustrated before?

Bob,

Thank you!

You have some interesting ideas put forward.

I like your proposal about making observations with multiple apertures. At this moment, I only have a 8x56. I’ve been thinking of buying a 15x70. It should make a nice comparison with the observations of my 8x56. And the 15x70 would still be compatible with my mirror mount.

I’ll let you know when I’ve found a suitable 15x70.

Hi Folks,

Here is my latest update on my little binocular project. My Bresser 8x56 has found the company of a TS Marine 15x70. I believe they'll use the mirror mount that I use to its full potential.

I had the opportunity to test the 15x70's under dark Spanish skies.

Here are my latest impressions with the 15x70's:

Binocular Icon 27 : IC 4756 meets NGC 6633.

Binocular Icon 28 : M4, a globular in Scorpius.

Binocular Icon 29 : M6 - The Butterfly Cluster.

Binocular Icon 30 : M7 - The Venom of the Scorpion.

Binocular Icon 31 : M8, The Lagoon Nebula.

Rony--

Your binocular sketch project continues to grow and get better and better. I like the fact that you are now reporting SQM readings. This helps to compare the sky quality you sketch under to what we have in our own backyard.

Adding the 15x70 binoculars present some nice comparisons on some of the objects. I know we get several people in this forum who want to know what is the difference in the eyecup between the 8x and 15x. Your sketches provide a simple yet effective answer to that question without wading through other specs--which often beginners do not understand.

Your time in Spain must have been wonderful.

Wes and Bob,

Thank you for the encouraging words on my little project.

I've come to the conclusion that one year of dedicated binocular observing will not suffice to complete this little project. I just don't have enough windows of opportunity to sketch all there is to see with a pair of bino's.

While I am having a great time with sketching my observations, I hope that my impressions will inspire people to use their binoculars more often under a starry sky.

Clear skies,
