Replacing Powertank 17 Battery Instructions & Pics new
      #3243209 - 07/28/09 03:34 PM

Your Powertank need a Replacement Battery? In my case, it was cheaper than buying a new Powertank 17 - plus I got a better battery.

The Celestron directions on how to take it apart are not clear - as there are some 'secret' screws not mentioned in the PDF --- nor is the PDF intended to help you replace the battery. Powertank Manual PDF So here is Musicwon's pictorial directions to help you out.

The battery in the unit is a 7.13" X 3.03" X 6.57" (LxWxH) 12V 17Ah sealed lead-acid rechargable battery.

Here is a link to a possible battery replacement - the $49.95 ($63.69 Shipped for my situation) Werker WA12-18NB Werker WP18-12 for $49.95

A new Powertank 17 as of July 28 2009 costs $100 plus shipping. So a replacement battery is a good move for $49.99 plus shipping (or no shipping if you have a local supply).

Here are a bunch more that will work
Celestron Powertank 17 Battery replacements

A BIG THANK YOU to Randy (B1Gred), David Knisley, Uncle Rod Mollise and Artic Eddie for the leads and information I needed to do this!

Nice little thing about the Powertank 17 is that the red light is detachable. Notice the 'fishing reel style" spool to reel the wire in and out. I never knew this until I read the manual about taking it apart. Be aware of this when you take it apart.

On each side of the screw holding the big lamp there are plastic washers on each side - take these off and store in a safe place.

Now you will need a long THIN philips head screw driver. The fat shaft red driver does not fit but the thin shaft yellow driver does. Some of the holes go deep in. You will need to take out 16 screws. Some are hidden - but you have me to guide you!

Now take all of the obvious screws out --- a total of 16 plus the long one for the big lamp. You can now pry apart the two half's. It took a bit of force for mine using a flat head screw driver. Careful of the permanent wires to the speaker - you might cut them if you are not aware of where they are.

Wires to be careful of cutting as you open the half off - the speaker wire.

A 5/16 socket wrench will take off the leads to the battery. This was a set from my Grandfather. He would be proud - he was always taking about the problems of the "throw away society." It feels great to fix it and keep it new and working!
