info. on the Vixen ED 100 f-9 dual focuser refract
      #5502141 - 11/03/12 10:08 AM

Hi. I have a chance to pick up a vixen ED 100 f-9 dual focuser refractor for 675.00. Does anybody know any info. on it? I've done some searches and found little info. How old is the model/was it dis-continued , was it re-placed with a newer model? Does it have Japanese optics? Is the price good? Is it a apochromatic scope? Any info. you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It's a rebranded Synta 100ED.

which means it's a pretty good scope.

the vixens which have an "SF" model are China. The "SS" are Japan.

Hi

As others have said, these are good scopes.

The price seems high to me. This is the same scope as the Orion. ED-100, its made by Synta Optical. OPT sells the Skywatcher version for $750 and that includes a case, a 2inch dielectric diagonal, rings, an 8x50 finder and free shipping... Skywatcher is the Synta Optical house brand...

Jon

I agree - to bring that price it needs a bunch of add ons - you should be able to get one with a diagonal, rings, finder for about $550.

This would have to come with over $100 worth of extra stuff to be worth it.

I'd be patient and keep looking for a deal. One will come up.

Astronomics, our web forum host, also sells the Sky Watcher 100ED package for $750.00 with free shipping and a small discount for Cloudy Nights members. They ordered one for me and it arrived FedEx four business days later.

vixen wants $1000 for their version.. which accounts for the high asking price, used. i wouldn't go for it since the vixen logo in this case doesn't get you a made in Japan scope.

Synta scope, made in China,China optics, maybe a bit better paint job and it had a nicer two speed crayford over the stock Orion scope. I bought a new one sealed in the box for $440 +taxes Canadian a couple of years back,it came with tube rings and dovetail, nothing else, at $675 (new or used?) its overpriced in MHO, if its used then its way over priced,DA.

Does it come with a case? I paid $395 (used) for my Orion ED100. It has a single speed focuser, and the gray paint isn't as nice, but it's the same optics.

They are nice scopes, but on the used market you can see them for around 400 nowadays. The xlt 102 ed is actually a ed 100 as well as the skywacher and vixen versions. These were all synta scopes. BUT NICE VIEWS.

There's a nice unit with 2-speed focuser that just popped up on Amart for $495 shipped.

I owned the single speed version.

I sold a Televue 101 because I didn't use it and thought I would still like to have a good 4" refactor, and found the Vixen 100ED sf for $400 (with case, rings, and dovetail).

Except for the wider true field of the Televue 101, I found the Vixen to be ever bit as good on any target that would fit into the field. Superb performance for a 4" scope. I don't know how a 4" scope could be meaningfully better.

Sold it to because it didn't get used much, but I recommend them highly.

Not at this price though, even with the dual speed focuser (which is not at all necessary on a 100mm f/9 scope by the way).

HI All

I recently purchased a used Vixen ED100SF (case, rings, dovetail, stock diagonal).

I also have a Orion ST80 and a Celestron C8SE/XLT to compare to.

First off, this scope is beautiful. I have it on a CG5 mount and it is a wonderful pairing.

This scope eats up magnification no problem - with little to no COMA or other nasties. I have the single speed focuser model (older) - which works extremely well. No slop or play, focusing is very smooth.

I have a Baader Hyperion 5mm EP, which gives me an effective 180x. I was looking at both Jupiter and M43 a few nights back with both the Vixen and the C8. With the Vixen both objects looked spectacular at 180x. With Jupiter, no fringing, no distortion, really a nice view. Equal to my Celestron C8 at similar magnification. M43 was stunning - long wispy arms, some good definition and pin points for the Trapezium.

I put in my 2x Orion Shorty Plus, giving me an effective 360x (!). Looking at Jupiter I was really quite surprised - there was some image breakdown, but I was still able to get a fairly sharp focus. No COMA or fringing - even at 360x! I was amazed ... not that I will use this power but wow, it really could hold up. Pushing it to 200x-250x is very rewarding as it holds up really well.

My ST80 breaks down very quickly when pushed above 80-100x. Beyond 100x ... nah ... time to retire it. Nice wide views below 50x, but going higher is a bit tough.

In summary, I have been blown away by the ED100SF - really exceeded my expectations. The sharpness and definition is amazing and I feel it bests my C8SE in many viewing situations. Double stars (one of my favorites to view) are really spectacular.

Its a keeper!

Clear Skies!
