Can't decide....What would you do?
      #5986136 - 07/23/13 01:56 PM Attachment (25 downloads)

Hello eyepiece peeps!

I am in a bit of a pickle at the moment. I just got a 22mm Orion LVW from an excellent seller today,(Thanks Matt T), (I had one before this but sold it to try out a Meade 5000 20mm UWA and I regretted it because the Meade was nowhere near as good as the 22mm LVW optically).

I have this lineup right now:

38mm Burgess SWA
22mm Orion LVW
14mm ES 100°
9mm ES 100°
5.5mm Meade UWA
2" Astro Tech Barlow

I have been thinking on and off about getting a 30mm ES 82 and now I have the chance to get it, but I will have to sell the 22mm LVW which I just got today, 38mm Burgess SWA and the 2 inch AT barlow.

It's the only way I could fund for the 30mm ES 82 UWA.

What would you do in my shoes? Keep the two eyepieces & barlow? or sell them off to try out a 30mm ES 82?

Cheers,

PS: Have a look at the 22mm LVW I just got.....It is literally MINT!

I can see getting rid of the 38mm.
It produces too big an exit pupil anyway.
The 22 would be a logical step down from the 30, alas.
IF you sell it, too, start saving your pennies for the 20mm ES100 as the logical step down from the 30 in the future.
Or, save your pennies, keep the eyepieces you have, and later look for a used 31 Nagler. I can pretty much assure you you'd be happy with that one.

Hi Don,

So right about the 38mm! I had some time to think about it and will be keeping the 22mm LVW and selling off my binoculars, 38mm SWA and barlow. Then I will have the 30mm ES 82 and 22mm LVW! The 31mm Nagler would be and EXCELLENT eyepiece to own down the road for sure as well....

.....I have lots of time to think about either one.

Cheers and thanks Don!

When I had the ES30/82 it was one of my long FL fav's, bettered only by the ES40/68. But I wouldn't chase it down the rabbit hole. As Don notes though, the 31T5 is the one to hold out for. sweeet!

Check this out! I had an extra eyecup lying around and it fits perfectly on the 22mm LVW !!! Works way better than the original one!

Hi John,

How was the 40mm ES 68 better than the 30mm ES 82?

Hey Markus! the 68's had little or no scatter, the 82's had quite a bit. It's not something folks with only a few seem to notice, or complain about, but when I had all of them, I spent a bit of time comparing; mostly daytime observations, and all the 82's had it to one extent or another while the 68's were pretty clean. I preferred all the 68's over the 82's. They just gave generally better views all around. must be all that argon :-)

Good! Glad you came down off the ledge on that...

A significantly large part of my own personal calculus on EP acquisitions concerns frequency-of-use. I have a fine 30mm UWA, but it doesn't see a lot of use... so NO WAY would i sacrifice an excellent (as well as hard-to-come-by!) EP in a high-traffic FL in order to acquire, or even upgrade a low-use EP!

No way I'd get rid of a 22LVW, it's a keeper.

I know, i know! We should ask CloudyNights to provide an "intervention" button, right next to the moderator button. A team could be dispensed in a van, interdicting any attempts at "jumping off deep ends" until stability is returned to the situation. I'm envisioning George Peppard, Dirk Benedict... maybe even Mr. T when warranted.

I agree 100% there. I'd use the 22mm way more than a lower power ocular!

No kidding eh? Every time I look at the pic of it here and in my case I wanna just hug it and kiss it, LOL!

Not only that, there needs to be one more, (AHHHNOLD) in Terminator mode to really make it stick ! I'm happy to say that me and the 22mm are back in business.

Markus, I spend very little time with my 31 Nagler; perhaps because of my own astigmatism, I am unable to appreciate crystalline widefield views. So for me it's just a really nice finder eyepiece. I spend almost all my time at middle and high powers, starting with my 20T5 on down. If you're that way at all, definitely do not trade your mid-length eyepieces to chase down the 30 ES, particularly the 22 you just got. You might consider the 34mm or even 28mm ES 68 for a finder/low power eyepiece and save some bucks.

Good advice Geo!

I am like you and I spend more time at mid / higher powers!

Thanks for the advice George!

Cheers,

Hey! - Now there's an idea!

Why not see if you can swing a trade of your 22LVW for a 34ES...?

Markus, wasn't it the ES34/68 we shared? I remember it didn't last too long :-0

Yep!

I can't remember what it was, but there was something I didn't like about the 34mm ES....I think it was kidney beans or blackouts.

I like the 22mm LVW way better than that one for sure!

yeah, eye positioning may have been problematical. My recollection, such as it is, doesn't recall any real fundamental advantage of one ES over another, with the exception of the scattering. I would give the ES30 a pass until a more fortuitous time perhaps.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide on the 21E or not. Now or later. I think later. I need to save up for that one. Not an easy 'impulse buy' :-)
