Nova Delphini 2013 (First Sketch) new
      #6028062 - 08/15/13 09:20 PM Attachment (74 downloads)

Hi all

I never sketched at the EP before this was my first attempt.

FIRST!
I was out viewing Aug 12 from 11:00PM until Aug 13th 2:30AM.
During this time frame I was in and out of the house viewing, there was clouds and then there wasn't lol. It's been oddly here lately.

Anyhow I was viewing many objects in the area with and with out filters. About 1:30AM on Aug 13th I came across a star that looked oddly, (note: not as bright as it was last night) I had no idea what it was, I tried looking it up on my charts and from the way it looked and the area I was at, there was nothing! So I just said I don't know lol, so I kept on observing the skies for about another hour.

Last night I came on CN's and someone posted about the NOVA, I checked it out and noticed it was in the same location that I seen the star. So I took out my Dob and let it cool down and was looking through my Bino's and could totally see it.
I finally got to my Dob to check it out, this had to have been what I seen that AM the other day. Only this time it was MUCH brighter, I used the same EP and seen the same stars around the area. I never sketched at the EP before so I said hmmm, I'm going to give it a shot so I grabbed a sheet or white paper and pencil and put it on a clip board.
The skies were good, in the time frame I sketched this was done in a Red/Orange zone. I took it in photoshop and did a fast job with it and shared it on CN's. But I got a few comments saying that MAY not be it, I was kinda bummed about that. Anyhow, today someone posted a link to a new shot of it and I looked it over and it sure looked like my sketch. So who knows, what do I know LOL.. I just look at the stars with my telescope! Below on the next post is the 2 images side by side so you can check it out.

But anyways I messed around with my sketch today and tried cleaning it up better, please note this is my first time LOL. It was fun to do and I will probably start sketching more.

Here is the fixed up sketch:

Jeff,

Nice first sketch--your learning curve was steep.

The star patterns in your sketch seem to match up with the image fairly well (if a little compressed). That's easy to do when sketching, btw.

In the future, it might be helpful for identification and comparison purposes if you do a wide enough field to include identifiable stars or objects. It's good to place the cardinal directions, too.

Welcome to the Sketching Forum!

Jeff,

Well done. When you know the night sky well and a bright nova appears it really does alert your brain that something doesn't look quite right.

Frank

Thank you.

Yeah I think next time for sure I will use a wide EP lol at 150x with my Dob I had to keep moving my scope a lot.. lol.
I tried to look at the whole area long as I could, I started to see fainter stars start to pop. More I looked more I go to add, my Hyperion zoom probably wasn't best. But the Nova looked cool zoomed in.

Thanks everyone, I need to go by some good pencils so I can try some nebula sketches.

Thanks guys.

just viewed it again tonight, doing some retouches on my sketch. the bright star at 11 o'clock at the edge should be higher and out of FOV. I been working on a website so I will add the retouch one and many more soon as I get more.

thanks again.

Jeff,

Thought you might like to see this image of Nova Del made by John Sabia. Your sketch compares very favorably to it.

Oh wow, thanks for the link.. I totally missed that thread. Yeah see the star that I mentioned in my post above about the one at 11 o'clock.. It should be higher and out of FOV. As I noticed last night viewing. I have went over my sketch and touched it up.

Thanks everyone. I know I wasn't going crazy when I seen it on 13th at 1:30am of course it was not as bright as it is now. But when you have viewed the same area for many years and catch something like that it makes you stop and think. It would have been cool, if I knew it was a Nova at the time to report it. but I guess it's hard to do that unless you have a university or something like that to review it. I'm not sure how that works, but it would have been very cool to be the one who discovered it.
