Hyperion 8-24 Mark III Zoom
      #6260037 - 12/18/13 12:43 PM

What are the apparent fields of view on every setting for this eyepiece? I am thinking of maybe picking one up, or a 17mm Vixen LVW.

With the zoom however, I would use it a lot at the 20mm 16mm and 8mm settings, and I could get three eyepieces in one. (I know there are more, but I am getting a 10mm Delos soon and I already own a 24mm ES 68).

I did try one one and can't remember exactly what it was like. I do remember that I thought it was ok, and there was nothing I disliked about it.

17mm Vixen LVW or Baader Hyperion Mark III Zoom?

Not really positive about these two either, as I might get something cheaper so I can also pick up a Lumicon UHC.

fl -- AFOV
----------
8 --- 72
12 -- 58
16 -- 52
20 -- 49
24 -- 42

These figures are from a CN thread on the Baader Zooms. The AFOV's listed here were determined by EdZ.

I would go with the Baader Zoom. In fact, I did ... twice!

Mark, with the 10 Delos and the ES68 24 already in the mix, the power/TFOV combinations that the Baader Zoom provides in your scope would be not be adding anything useful, other than perhaps a decent 150x (@8mm). Mike's AFOV numbers were used for calculations:

Bzoom 8: 150x, 0.48*
Delos 10: 120x, 0.60*
BZoom 12: 100x, 0.58*
BZoom 16: 75x, 0.69*
BZoom 20: 60x, 0.82*
ES68 24: 50x, 1.36*

BZoom @ 20 is way smaller AFOV/TFOV than the ES68 24, so no sense in using it at the f/l and the Delos 10 has greater TFOV than the BZoom @ 12 and nearly the same of the BZoom @ 16 while packing more power, AFOV and eye relief.

So the 8mm setting would be your only added benefit and that has something I know you don't like (fuzzy field stop) so my advice is to go with the 17 LVW.

Hi Syed,

I was thinking the same thing as you at one point after I had posted this! The only real benefit would be at the 8mm Setting, so you are indeed correct.

Really the only reason to go with the zoom, given your other eyepieces, is the convenience of not having to swap out eyepieces as much. Which can be a major motivator for those who want to maximize observing time, or those who live in cold climates and don't want to risk dropping an eyepiece handling it with gloves on. The LVW is going to be a touch sharper and be able to frame targets at higher mag. That would be my vote. Depending on your scope and preferences regarding 2" barrels, the Delos could be an option too given the current sale price. If you like the 10mm why not? That being said, I have heard the 17.3mm Delos is not quite as sharp as the 10mm, and I would recommend LVW below F5.

at 17mm, I'd get another Delos...the 17.3.

As another poster already noted, the Baader Zoom adds the usefulness of not having to switch back and forth among multiple eyepieces!

Well....I won't be picking up a 17mm Delos! I tried one and didn't care for the edge correction on it. It has awesome central sharpness, but the edges weren't what I hoped for in the FL. It reminded me so much of the 22mm Pan.

Think I will just pass on a 17mm EP altogether and also the Baader Zoom and grab something in between my 10mm Delos and 5mm Vixen LVW!

Prob a 7mm Pentax XL or XW!

Thanks for the help though!
