Seems like a larger version of my new AT80EDT, which you also reviewed.
I wonder if the late TMB designed mine also?

I have the AT 111 mm APO and it is my favorite scope. I got back into astronomy a few years ago. I had a damaged C8, and while it was being repaired I stopped by Astronomics in Norman and picked up a AR5 on a LXD75 mount, the display model for $500. I also found myself tempted by the AT 66 mm and a closeout on the Meade monochrome and color DSI cameras.

To my surprise I found myself using the AT 66 more then the AR5. And, what was more surprising is I found with CCD imaging that I could image and thus see more from my backyard with the small scope than I could with the C8 under dark skies in Oklahoma.

At this years NEAF I had a chance to buy the AT 111 mm and have not been disappointed. I have it out every chance I get. I agree with the review comments about the case holding more then just the scope. But I find myself carrying several cases anyway - so it has not been a problem. The AT 111 mm is a tremendous scope.

Thanks for the review.

However, as someone that has never owned a refractor before, but is considering.., I think the big question I have at the end of reading your review would be: "Would YOU buy it?

Thanks again..,

Fine report, Tom.

Did you try any "challenge" double stars with the AT-111.

Sure does look nice in black! I have the white version and have been exceedingly pleased with it.

Is this an air spaced triplet or cemented?

Tom did not design the lens int he 80EDT. I wish, but he didn't.

Tom,

Nice review. I'm just not sure as the owner of a 102mm LOMO Doublet APO the 9mm advantage is going to show me a whole lot more. Owners of 102mm Achros and first time buyers should look at the 110 class and this one looks to be a goody. What are your feelings as far as making the jump from a 102 APO to the AT111? This scope is within the range of a Vixen GP clone so upgrading the mount could be postoned.

I believe they sold a red one at NEAF, and my black one. It is a very nice telescope. I took it with me this past summer to New Mexico and used it for numerous star parties in the NM state parks. I always invited the locals to come out with their scopes and join us.

While most scopes today work well and provide excellent views. The view of the moon, planets, and double stars through the AT 111 mm always resulted in - well - envy. It is a very nice scope to look through.

I am getting ready to try it for astro-imaging and expect spectacular results.

Hi Terry,

Looks like the AT111 and AT66ED are mounted on an LXD75. I'll be interested in seeing how well this setup works for astro-imaging. My SV102BV even loaded with a 2" diagonal, Hyperion eyepieces and Stellarvue F50 finder works very well visually. I am also thinking of trying some imaging so seeing how the mount handles your setup for imaging would be interesting. If it would not be too much to ask could you email me a heads up when you get a chance to post some images?

Thanks and clear skies,
