CB,

You don't have to give up on the 12x bin, it can be better for astronomy in a number of ways, it's just that you need some help keeping it steady.

Have you considered a tall monopod? For one, Kevin at BigBinoculars sells a Giottos monopod with a Bogen tilt head that is 6' tall and works quite well with 12-16x binoculars. It weighs under 2#. http://www.bigbinoculars.com/monopod.htm

It just might do the trick for you.
