Personally, I've gravitated to the point where I no longer use binoculars that cannot be hand-held. My largest is a 15x60, about 8" long. If I need to drag out a tripod and binomount it's easier for me to carry out a small alt-az mount and a small refractor w/ binoviewer. It's more versatile.
YMMV greatly, of course.
