My £0.02:
For optical performance, I agree that magnification and aperture "are king". For ease of portability (one major advantage of binoculars), they aren't!
And, if you are going really big, it makes much more sense to use a light bucket with a binoviewer -- much cheaper option than the equivalent brightness and max magnification with a binocular. (Imagine constructing, mounting -- and collimating -- a 15" binocular used at magnifications up to, say, ×400! A 20" light bucket would be far simpler in almost every respect.)
