I apologise for attempting to develop the discussion after what was a fully comprehensive reply from EdZ to the original question, but I felt (and still feel!) that there are sensible practical limits to the aperture and magnification of binoculars, Gemini notwithstanding !

Edit: After a PM from edcannon (thanks, Ed!), it appears that I have leapt to grasp the wrong end of this particular stick. So I need to change my apology to one for the false leap...
