As I stated above, it's not simple. BUT, it can be made simple.
Quality may not always be, but often is fairly obvious. It can sometimes be pretty simple to judge low quality from moderate quality from high quality (puts on armor) without even looking thru the binoculars in question.
To use the BPI first ask are these cheap optics, moderate quality optics or premium optics. The manufacturers simply cannot incorporate high quality into cheap.
cheap optics -10%, moderate quality optics NC, premium optics +10%.
Know something about what you are buying. easiest is coatings. Are all or any components uncoated or single coated? Are they multi-coated throughtout? Do they have premium multicoatings such as found on Fujinon or Nikon or other premium binoculars?
lack of MC or any coatings on any surface -10%, fully coated or standard FMC = NC, premium FMC +10%.
This won't always be 100% accurate, but neither are the basic indices.
